Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are among the top two actresses in the Bollywood film industry. The duo have a global fan base and have respectively also got the title of 'Miss World'. Aishwarya had a different fanbase when she won hearts with the role of 'Jodhaa' in Ashutosh Gowariker's directed, Jodhaa Akbar. On the other hand, Priyanka's role in Madhur Bhandarkar's film, Fashion won her an award, and Ashutosh could not digest that.
It was in 2009 when the IFFA Awards took place, and 'desi girl' Priyanka got the award for her phenomenal performance in her film, Fashion. She received the Best Actress award, and Aishwarya was nominated in the same category. Sadly, Priyanka received the love and award, which did not gel well with Ashutosh. He got the award for Best Director; however, in his speech, he was sarcastic towards Priyanka. The actor, according to an IBT Times report said:
"Priyanka I love you, but I don’t know how you got the award for Best Actress when Aishwarya was also nominated in the same category for Jodhaa Akbar.”
Ashutosh's remark stunned everyone in the audience. For the unversed, Priyanka and Kangana's roles in Fashion had charmed their fans. Both actresses had given their hearts and souls to create a masterpiece film.
Going ahead, the filmmaker also said that Aishwarya's mother-in-law, Jaya, was also left shocked and wondered how Priyanka won the award that was to be won by Aishwarya. It is said that Ashutosh wanted to dilute the entire situation, as his weird comments had created a lot of controversy. Many thought that Jaya was unnecessarily dragged into the entire situation. It is also said that Jaya wanted Ashutosh to clarify the whole situation. Earlier in an interview with the IANS, she said:
"First of all it is being presumed that Ashutosh unnecessarily mentioned my name regarding Aishwarya’s omission from the awards. The fact is, I suggested he bring up the question on stage at IIFA. We were discussing why Aishwarya has not been given any award for Jodha Akbar and I suggested Ashutosh bring up the matter. So when he mentioned my name he wasn’t doing anything wrong.”
Jaya had to justify her stand and revealed she had no issues with Aishwarya's contemporary, Priyanka, winning the award, but her only concern was that the performance of her bahu was ignored. Priyanka, on the other hand, seemed to have no issues with Ashutosh or Jaya's statements.
