Veteran actress, Jaya Bachchan is often known for sharing her unflitered opinions. While people usually bring their best foot forward in the world, Jaya is known to own her controversially candid personality. Despite being criticised for her actions at times, she has always been true to herself. However, the actress is not always wrong, and netizens came through to support her after a video of her surfaced online.
A prayer meet was held on April 6, 2025, to honour the memory of late actor, Manoj Kumar at a solemn ceremony organised by the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) at JW Marriott, Juhu, Mumbai. Several film stars attended the meeting and paid their respect to the actor, and Jaya Bachchan was among the attendees. However, what caught the netizen's attention was a video of Jaya Bachchan sending a woman away angrily after she was approached for a picture.
Dressed in an all-white salwar suit, Jaya was approached by a woman as she was standing at the entrance of the complex. The woman's husband was recording their meet-up. However, Jaya got angry and gestured for the couple to leave. Several media houses shared the video.
The video was also shared on the discussion platform, Reddit and netizens shared their support for Jaya Bachchan. They pointed out how a prayer meeting was an inappropriate place to ask for pictures. A user penned, "Who asks for a photo at a funeral where people have lost their mind?" Another wrote, "Ye koi jagah hai...ni aap hi bataiye ye koi jagah hai." A comment stated, "People trying to click pics in prayer meet should be kicked out. This time, Jaya is right." A user commented, "I'm sorry, but why on earth would you think that a funeral is an appropriate place to ask for photos?." A user, in a long note, wrote:
"I think her reaction is very justified. First of all that woman came from behind and the surprised look and response was a normal one to being touched from behind. Then she turned and saw the man happily clicking a picture away. The angry movement will show on the pictures he was taking. If she had responded "kindly" that would have also been captured and those two would have gotten what they wanted. They both deserved the reprimand, if I am honest, for using an effing funeral to get celebrity pictures."
The prayer meet became a moment of collective grief and gratitude as friends, family and admirers from the industry came together under one roof to celebrate the life and legacy of the iconic 'Bharat' of Indian cinema. Among the attendees were actor-filmmaker, Farhan Akhtar, director, Rakesh Rohsan, actors, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Aamir Khan, Jonny Liver and actress, Esha Deol. Manoj Kumar's close friend and colleague, Prem Chopra, director David Dhawan, Subhash Ghai, Sonu Nigam, Shekhar Suman, Anu Malik and several members of the CINTAA who had walked with the late superstar or were influenced by his work also reached the prayer meet to offer their respects.
