It was on June 3, 1973, when the most iconic and power-packed pair of Bollywood, Jaya Bhaduri and Amitabh Bachchan, got married in a hush-hush ceremony. The couple has completed 52 years of togetherness, and on the occasion of their 52nd anniversary, take a look at the time when the pair was to have a simple wedding, but a Bengali priest objected to the same. There was a twist in Jaya and Amitabh's wedding as the Bengali priest was not fond of the actress being a Bengali Brahmin marrying Amitabh, a non-Brahmin.
Soon after Jaya and Amitabh got married, the protest by the Bengali priest did not get out in the public eye. However, it was Jaya's dad, Taroon Coomar Bhaduri, a journalist who had written about the same in an article back in 1989 for The Illustrated Weekly of India. He had called his daughter, Jaya, a determined lady who liked to have things her way since childhood. He did not know what drew Jaya and Amitabh to each other. He then shared their secret marriage, and when they decided to get married, things moved fast. Jaya and Amitabh got married secretly in the flat of their family friends at Malabar Hill in front of the Pandit. However, Taroon had written that a Bengali priest had objected and had quipped:
"Priest protests against inter-caste union. A Bengali marriage is usually a long-drawn-out but highly interesting affair. The Bengali priest (who was located with great difficulty) at first protested against having to preside over a marriage between a Bengali Brahmin (Jaya) and a non-Bengali non-Brahmin (Amit). After a lot of hassle, this was sorted out."
It was tough for Jaya's father to find a Bengali priest in Mumbai, and after finding the pandit had raised his set of objections. Jaya's father also revealed in the article that Jaya and Amitabh's wedding was not like a Bollywood wedding; it was an intimate one where only the closest family and friends were present. Jaya's dad, Taroon, had also shared that her decision to get married came as a shock to her, and he had also shared:
"I felt he was not the run-of-the-mill Bombay film star. There were vicious people who said that Amitabh married Jaya because she was a big star, but it’s totally untrue. He waited for Zanjeer to be a success. But Jaya would have married him anyway. I know that for certain. She is not a fickle-minded person."
Amitabh, in his wedding, followed all the rituals diligently, which had gone on till the next morning. Then the couple had gone to London, and when they came back, Jaya's dad had kept a reception at Bhopal, and Amitabh did whatever was told to him. There were rumours doing back then that Jaya's father was not happy with her decision to marry Amitabh. Taroon had squashed the rumours and had written:
"I would like to know just one good reason why my wife or I would have been opposed to the Bhaduri-Bachchan alliance. Amitabh was, and is, a lovable boy. He struggled hard to come up in the world of films. He proposed marriage to Jaya only when the film Zanjeer clicked."
Team BollywoodShaadis wishes Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan a very happy anniversary!
