Jaya And Rekha Were Neighbours Before Things Went Sour, Latter Would Call Her 'Didi Bhai' For Advise

The love triangle between Jaya Bachchan, Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan is not something the world has been unaware of. On several occasions, both actresses acknowledged the situation between them, and Jaya even showed her dismay at it. However, only a few know that things were not always bitter among the duo, and they were also once close neighbours.

While the world focused on their cold war, Yasser Usman brought forward a completely different chapter between them in his book titled, Rekha: The Untold Story. The book featured a chapter, 'Didibhai', which shared insight into the friendship that once bloomed between Rekha and Jaya back in the day. Yasser dated these events back to the early 70s, long before Amitabh Bachchan came into the picture. 

The chapter revealed that Rekha and Jaya were neighbours, and a young Rekha would often visit Jaya's home. Yasser, in his book, revealed that after the success of her first few films, Rekha purchased her own flat in 1972. He added that she was in the same building as Jaya, who had proved her mantel in the film industry. The book was quoted as saying:

"After the success of her first few films, Rekha bought her own flat in Bombay in 1972. Leaving Hotel Ajanta, she shifted to Juhu's Beach Apartments at age eighteen. In the same apartment building lived the actress Jaya Bhaduri, who had then firmly established herself as an actress par excellence. She had the range to easily fit the needs of commercial and meaningful cinema. This was why she was counted amongst the most versatile, important and serious actors of that time." 

Rekha would affectionately call Jaya 'Didibhai'

The book further revealed that Rekha and Jaya became close friends, and it was at the latter's apartment when Jaya introduced Amitabh Bachchan to Rekha. Yasser shared that Rekha would lovingly refer to Jaya as 'Didibhai' and would often meet with her. He added that Jaya would also advise Rekha on life and career. Another excerpt from the book revealed:

"At Beach Apartments, Rekha and Jaya would often meet. Rekha affectionately called Jaya 'Didibhai' and frequently went over to Jaya's flat to spend time with her. The latter would advise her on life and career. It was there that Rekha first met Jaya's boyfriend, Amitabh Bachchan."

These stories were further backed by another quote that referenced actor-filmmaker, Mehmood's biography. The book reflected on the friendship between Rekha, Jaya and Amitabh and shared how they would often hang out as close buddies. The book mentioned the biography, Mehmood: A Man of Many Moods and stated:

"It is said that during those times, Amitabh's girlfriend Jaya was a pillar of strength to him. More successful than him, she even referred him to several producers. Author of the actor Mehmood's official biography, Hanif Zaveri, says Amitabh and Anwar (Mehmood's brother) were close friends. Anwar told me that he had often taken Amitabh and Jaya on long drives. The two would sit in the front seat of the car along with him while Rekha would sit in the back seat, and they would talk through the journey. This is also recorded in Mehmood's official biography Mehmood: A Man of Many Moods."
