Javed Akhtar is one of the most prominent screenwriters in Hindi Cinema. He made a famous duo with Salim Khan, and they wrote some of the most iconic films of the 70s. Javed Akhtar is known for his creative approach and honest attitude. Apart from his work, the screenwriter's personal life also brought him under the spotlight. Javed was married to his first wife, Honey Irani, but divorced and got married to his second wife and actress, Shabana Azmi. In a new conversation, the screenwriter reveals what went on behind the scenes when his first marriage with Honey Irani failed.
Recently, the '70s writing duo, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar came together with their docu-series, Angry Young Men. In the series, they discussed the different aspects of their personal and professional lives, which made headlines in those times. Among other revelations, Javed Akhtar reflected on his first marriage in the last episode of the series and how he only feels guilt towards his first wife, Honey Irani.

Javed Akhtar added he is 60 to 70 percent responsible for his failed marriage with his first wife, Honey Irani. For the unversed, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani married in 1972 and divorced in 1985. The former couple has two children, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Coincidently, it was at the same time that he split with his writing partner, Salim Khan. He was quoted as saying:
"Honey is one person in the world, towards whom I feel guilty. And she is the only person. Sixty-seventy percent responsibility lies on my shoulders, for the failure of that marriage. If I had as much understanding as I have today, perhaps things would not have gone wrong. It is very difficult to accept, but that's how it is."
Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani's son and filmmaker, Farhan Akhtar, shared that he experienced mixed emotions during his father's second marriage. The actor admitted he felt betrayed and angry, which was expected due to the circumstances in their life. In his words:
"There was a phase when I was angry with him, I felt betrayed by him. There were all those very normal emotions that I did go through as a child growing up."
On the other hand, Zoya Akhtar mentioned she and Farhan lived with their mother, Honey Irani, following their parents' divorce. She said it took them a lot of time to make their relationships with their father normal and his second wife, Shabana, played a big role. Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi married in 1984.
