The writer, who has been a part of showbiz for a long time, has always been vocal about his battle with alcoholism. Recently, he appeared on the Be A Man, Yaar podcast and shared some more insights into his tussle with Alcoholism.
Javed Akhtar revealed that he turned to consuming alcohol to deal with emotions like anger and bitterness he felt from a young age. As a result, he became offensive, which wouldn't have been the case if he wasn't consuming alcohol. He admitted that alcohol brought forward a 'devil' side of him. He was quoted as saying:

"Maybe there were bottled-up emotions, the anger, the bitterness. That is why after drinking I would become quite offensive, which I'm otherwise not, nor ever was. This would never happen in my sober moments. But peeke koi ek dusra devil nikal aata tha.”

Javed Akhtar continued saying that quitting alcohol was a good decision that he made in life. The veteran screenwriter recalled that he last drank on July 31, 1991. After that day, he never took any sip of alcohol and avoided it during celebratory occasions as well. In addition, he said that if he could go back in time, he would have asked himself not to consume alcohol, which he did for 20-25 years of his life.
Javed Akhtar agrees that drinking alcohol wasted nearly a decade of his life. He feels he could have spent that time on better things, like learning something new that he wanted to do back in the day. In his words:
"I think I wasted at least a decade of my life where I could do much more, but because of all this, I wasted it. I could have done so much, learn a musical instrument, could learn another language like French or Persian. I had the time and the facility, but I wasted my time, which is not good. I had to learn a lot more."
