Spider-Man fame, James Franco is not new to controversies in his name. An American actor, director, and writer is known for his charm, good looks and the ability to bring sincerity and depth to his characters. The Golden Globe winner is best known for his roles in the Spider-Man franchise, Pineapple Express, the TV series, Freaks and Geeks and his Academy Award-nominated performance in 127 Hours.
James Franco is once again in the media headlines for his allegedly weird obsession with Henry Cavill. After being faced with multiple allegations against James's name for being inappropriate towards multiple female co-actors and other women, James is now being scrutinised for his beef with Henry Cavill. Here’s what we know about the controversy between James and Henry and other allegations against James.
Born in Palo Alto, California, on April 19, 1978, James Franco is the son of a businessman father and an author mother. He is the eldest of the three children and has been a bright student since his childhood. James attended the University of California, Los Angeles, but dropped out after his first year to pursue a career in acting.
James got his breakthrough in the 2000s and gained wide recognition as 'Harry Osborn', best friend to 'Peter Parker' in the world-renowned franchise of Spider-Man. Franco proved his adaptability to act in different genres and roles by acting in films like City by the Sea, the mythological retelling of Tristan & Isolde and the World War I fighter pilot drama, Flyboys.
James was cast out of Hollywood at the peak of his career in 2018, when he was accused of multiple allegations of se*ual misconduct and inappropriate behaviour by several women and female co-stars. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sarah Tither-Kaplan, one of the accusers and a former student at his now closed acting school, Studio 4, claimed that she and other victims would give in to James’s requests as they believed it would help them advance their careers in the showbiz.

During a 2018 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Franco strongly denied the se*ual misconduct allegations. But, in October 2020, the women filed a lawsuit against Franco and two other men, one of whom co-owned the acting school with the Freaks and Geeks star, stating that the students were defrauded by Studio 4 and that they were constantly forced to perform s*x scenes on camera. The matter was settled in 2021, when Franco and his fellow accused associates agreed to settle for USD 2.2 million. The allegations came at a time when the MeToo movement was at its height, and several women came forward across the world to claim allegations of se*ual misconduct and inappropriate behaviours against people in power and high-end actors in the showbiz industry.

In December 2021, on an episode of The Jess Cagle Show, James Franco discussed the se*ual misconduct allegations against him. He called titling one of his classes at his acting school “s*x scenes” a stupid decision. James also acknowledged the fact that while he may not have had inappropriate relations with anyone in that particular class, he, however, was involved with certain pupils over the course of his teaching career.
In October 2024, James shared gratitude for being welcomed back into the industry in 2022 after the lawsuit by his accusers. He assured the media and audience that throughout the time he was castout he had been reflecting on his actions and is now back with a new perspective and changes in his life. As a result of his lawsuit and a long list of allegations against him, James has been blacklisted by many big shots in Hollywood, including his long-time friend, Seth Rogen.

Talking about his obsession with Henry Cavill, James spoke about his relationship with Henry Cavill during a review of Man of Steel for Vice. James told that he had gone incognito to see the superhero movie in London’s Leicester Square, all the while ensuring that he was not recognised. James said:
“It wasn’t my film, and I don’t think Henry Cavill would have wanted to see me there. Not that we’re enemies. Years ago, we worked on a film together called Tristan & Isolde. I played Tristan, and he played my backstabbing sidekick. My hunch is that he didn’t like me very much. I don’t know this for certain, but I know that I wouldn’t have liked myself back then because I was a difficult young actor who took himself too seriously.”

James and Henry Cavill starred together in the 2006 release, Tristan & Isolde, a movie inspired by the medieval legend revolving around the characters, 'Tristan', played by James and 'Melot', played by Henry. James’s character was a Cornish nobleman who was in conflict with the Irish and, contradictorily, in love with an Irish princess. Cavill played 'Melot', 'Tristan’s cousin, who was jealous of 'Tristan', which is ironic because, in reality, Henry was known for his piercing looks more than James.
Addressing his supposed obsession with Henry, James believed that because he was a young and struggling actor at the time, and he starred alongside Henry in Tristan & Isolde, he felt that Henry’s feelings towards him were not positive. James’s comments came after assessing Henry’s behaviour during their time as co-stars. He also expressed uncertainty about Cavill’s perception of him, reflecting on his own past conduct. James was also concerned that Henry’s estranged behaviour towards him might have come due to his history of multiple allegations and his dubious image in the industry. In an instance of suggesting admiration for Cavill, James suggested that he would not mind spending an afternoon with him.
The world of showbiz is complex and unfathomable; actors face dilemmas, and their past actions often cloud how people perceive them. Although there have been no certain reasons for Henry’s unease with James, whether it was for a personal reason or entirely based on his troubled past, James continues to navigate the fallout from his actions in the past, while Henry has given no remarks on the James Franco situation.
