Iqra recently appeared as a guest on her husband, Yasir’s latest show, The Pick And Drop Show. The husband-wife duo delved into the professional front of the actress, and Yasir heaped praises on the actress. During their conversation, the host touched upon the topic of the controversy related to Iqra’s recently concluded drama, Mannat Murad and the Pakistani actress, Saboor Aly. For the unversed, in November 2023, when ‘Mannat’ and ‘Murad’s wedding scene was televised in the country, it caused quite a controversy. What happened was Iqra, as the female lead in the drama, wore a joda, which was very similar to what Saboor donned for her real wedding. Even the wedding festivities shown in the drama had a striking resemblance with the real-life wedding of Saboor and Ali Ansari.
Consequently, Saboor expressed her anger over the same via an Instagram story, which caused an uproar amongst the audience, who had mixed reactions to Saboor’s stance. Now, the 26-year-old Iqra has revealed the real reason behind choosing the same gharara for her on-screen character ‘Mannat’ as Saboor. She mentioned:
“Hum drama shoot kar rahe the Mannat Murad toh hamare director ki khwaaish thi ki jo situation bhi thi jo Mannat hai wo apni maa ka lehenga pehne kyunki uski bhai ki khwaaish hai ki wo apni shaadi ka joda apni maa ki shaadi ka joda pehne. Toh humne bohot dhundaa par aajkal jo designers bana rahe hai wo bohot modern cheezein bana rahe hai. Of course, actress leti hai designers se as a barter aur apne projects mein use karti hai, that’s a very well-known fact.”

Iqra further disclosed that they searched for such traditional wedding outfits relentlessly for quite some time but to no use. Finally, Mannat Murad’s director, Syed Wajahat Hussain, showed Iqra the reference to Saboor's wedding outfit. And then Iqra went on to ask the designer, Faiza Saqlain, who is also a good friend of the actress, about the outfit, to which the designer confirmed that she had the ensemble. However, Iqra did not want her look to be the exact copy of Saboor’s D-day. Hence, she made a few changes here and there as per her taste. She said:
“Faiza Saqlain, jo designer hai wo meri bohot acchi dost bhi hai, toh ye joda unke paas tha toh maine unse bola ki aap ye mujhe de de project mein istemaal karna hai kyunki uski ek old-school feel hai uss jode ki, wo green red ke combination mein jo gold hai wo ek purane jode mein sahi baithta hai. Maine unse bola ki shirt change kar de kyunki main exact same nahi rakhna chahti. Jo jewellery uske sahi set baithti hai wo usi type ki thi, matlab maine ye puri look khud bakayda banayi thi. Lekin main agar ek sacchi baat bolun toh it’s not like I copied her, but yes, I don’t mind saying this on record ki main bohot zyada inspired this unke look se kyunki wo mujhe bohot khoobsurat aur pyaari lagi thi.”

The Mannat Murad further added that she did not think it was necessary to inform someone that she was borrowing the joda as it was technically not hers to begin with, it was the designers. Iqra mentioned that she never thought it would create such a fuss in the future, otherwise, she would have informed Saboor about this earlier. She also felt bad about the entire fiasco which unfolded afterwards.
Yasir Hussain then jokingly said that Priyanka Chopra should also be angry with Iqra as the latter took inspiration from the Indian actress’ wedding look. When Iqra and Yasir got married in 2019, the Pakistani actress wore an elegant red-on-red lehenga, which was very similar to what PeeCee wore for her real-life Indian wedding with Nick Jonas back in 2018. Iqra said:
“Maine jaake Nomi Ansari ko bola ki mujhe aisa red-on-red bana do bhai Priyanka jaise bas sleeves puri bana do phir log ye na bole ki puri exact copy chaap diya hai. Maine apni shaadi ke liye Priyanka Chopra se inspiration li thi, maine Nomi se bola tha ki mujhe aisa red-on-red chahiye warna isse pehle this wasn’t a thing but aap isko apne type se customise kar dena. Meri inspiration thi wo, ye bhi bhi wahi inspiration thi toh agar wo jake Nomi Ansari se bole ki jaisa Iqra ne shaadi mein red-on-red pehna tha waisa mujhe bana do toh main kuch bol toh nahi sakti na, mere paas copyright nahi hai uss design ka.”

Iqra further said that she did not want to escalate things; hence, she did not have a word with Saboor about this whole fiasco. When Yasir suggested that whenever they meet next, Saboor and Iqra should clear things out, the latter said that there is nothing to clear, and it would be better if they just skipped this and moved forward in their lives. Iqra said she felt bad but was not apologetic about it.
