Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest film, 12th Fail, became a massive hit when it was released in October last year. The film beautifully narrated the rags-to-riches story of IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma, played by Bollywood actor, Vikrant Massey. 12th Fail showcased the struggle, determination, and courage of a simple, poverty-stricken boy, Manoj Kumar Sharma, whose hard work led him to become one of the most inspiring people in the field of civil services. The film has become one of the commercially successful films of 2023.

IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma shares he did not take any monetary benefit after 12th Fail’s success

Recently, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma opened up about how the 2023 film has changed his life, and his feelings behind the same. He also revealed that he did not take a single penny for letting the director, Vidhu Vinod Chopra tell his story to the entire world. During ABP’s Ideas of India Summit, the IPS officer said that he did not get any monetary compensation for either the film or the book, on which the film was based. Manoj Sharma said:

“If you ask me what I got personally, then I didn’t get anything, because I don’t take money from anyone or go in expecting any monetary benefits from people. I am a visapt imaandaar (totally honest) person, I am as I was at the time of selection. My wife is also like that.”

IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma reveals that he and his wife have a ‘no-gift policy’

Further into the interaction, the IPS officer shared that he and his wife, IRS Shraddha Joshi Sharma, have a ‘no-gift policy’. Ever since they were preparing for UPSC, they made a pact of not wearing any expensive jewellery. Speaking more on the same, Manoj Sharma mentioned that his wife still does not wear diamonds, which is why they don’t have much expense. He added:

“At the time when my wife and I were preparing for the exams, we had decided that we’ll not wear diamonds and jewellery. She still doesn’t wear it so we don’t have that expense. We don’t even have a gift system, we don’t give each other gifts on anniversaries and birthdays. If we want to give gifts we write letters to each other. So we don’t need to go shopping.”

IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma mentions that his biggest reward is that the youth of the country is inspired by his journey

During the conversation, IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma mentioned that the film, 12th Fail has served as an inspiration to the youth of the country. He said that the only benefit that he achieved through the film and the book was that the things he always wanted to tell his countrymen were conveyed through them. The IPS officer further mentioned getting letters from school students, who want to become like him. He said these acknowledgements from the students were his real reward. Manoj Sharma said:

“The only benefit that I have got is that the things that I wanted to tell the people of our country have come out through the film and the book, and if you want to take something from it then you can. What makes me happy is that school students are sending me letters and saying that they want to be like me, and to be honest, that is my reward. There was a guy who said that his father used to tell him about his struggles, but he never understood what his father meant. But after watching the movie, he went and hugged his father. This is what I have gained.”

While concluding his statement at the summit, the officer thanked Vidhu Vinod Chopra for sharing his story with the masses. He further added that every nook and corner of the country is filled with such inspiring stories, but unfortunately, no one cares to tell such stories. He said that his biggest reward would be when even a few people would start working hard and be honest and not take shortcuts or resort to dishonesty after watching the film.
