Inside Liza Minnelli's Four Broken Marriages, From Peter Allen To Michael Jackson's Friend, David

Liza Minnelli is one of the most respected veteran actresses, singers, and dancers in Hollywood. Not many might be aware, but she began her musical career as a nightclub singer. At the time, Liza was only 19. After finding success as a live performer, she went on to record a number of albums in the '60s, such as Liza! Liza! (1964), It Amazes Me (1965), and There Is a Time (1966). In 1989, Liza gave her listeners an iconic collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on Results. The album's electronic dance-style vibes made it top the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K. Liza Minnelli's last studio album, titled Confessions, came out in 2010.  

Recently, almost 13 years after her last single, the 79-year-old debuted her new song, Kids Wait Till You Hear This. What sets this song apart from her previous ones is that she collaborated with an AI voice cloning company, ElevenLabs. However, she quickly put fans' concerns to rest by revealing that, instead of using AI vocals on the EDM track, she has only used AI arrangements. While Liza's professional life is grabbing the spotlight at present, her private life has also been the talk of the town for ages, especially her relationship with her four husbands. Liza Minnelli married her first husband, Peter Allen, who was an Academy Award-winning artist 

Love entered Liza Minnelli's life at a pretty young age. This is why, just a few days before she turned 21, she tied the knot with her first husband, Peter Allen. For the 1967 wedding ceremony, Liza chose to wear a Victorian-inspired gown. Peter Allen was one of the most renowned musicians, songwriters, and stage performers of the time. In fact, he even won an Academy Award for the theme song of the film, Arthur, which saw Dudley Moore and Liza herself as part of the cast.  

For those unaware, Peter Allen first rose to fame as a part of the musical duo, The Allen Brothers. At the time, Judy Garland, Liza's mother, helped pave the way for them in the U.S. and the U.K. Reportedly, it was Judy who introduced Allen to Liza. Unfortunately, in a shocking turn of events, Liza discovered that the man she married was g**. This led the duo to split after spending 8 years of married life together in 1974, although it is worth noting that Allen and Judy had previously separated in 1969.  

Liza Minnelli's relationship with Emmy-winning director, Jack Haley, Jr. lasted for five years 

Liza Minnelli gave marriage a second chance with Hollywood staple, Jack Haley, Jr. He was best known for his work in television. He had won a number of accolades, including a Peabody Award for the documentary series, Biography. Jack was also a producer for the 41st Academy Awards, for which he earned an Emmy. At the time of their wedding, Liza was reportedly 28 years old. Although we do not know for sure how the duo first met, according to reports, they had a prior connection as Jack's father played the Tin Man in the 1939 production of The Wizard of Oz, alongside Judy Garland, Liza's mother.  

Interestingly, according to a 2008 report by The Guardian, Liza and Jack's marriage was based mostly on companionship rather than love. The report read, “Haley was husband number two and straight, but they were friends rather than lovers.” Even then, Jack and Liza were happily married for 5 years before divorcing in 1979.  

Liza Minnelli's third marriage was to a sculptor named Mark Gero 

At 33 years of age, Liza Minnelli married Mark Gero, who was a sculptor by profession, in 1979. However, compared to Liza's previous marriages, which were constantly in the spotlight, she kept her relationship with Mark pretty private. Sadly, by January 1992, almost a decade into their marriage, things seemed to have soured between Liza and Mark. According to reports, the cause was Liza's miscarriage in 1981. Eventually, the singer was “granted an uncontested divorce” from her sculptor husband.  

Liza Minnelli's fourth husband was introduced to her by Michael Jackson  

If a report by The Washington Post is to be believed, it was none other than Michael Jackson who introduced Liza Minnelli to his close friend, David Gest. He was a well-known name in the entertainment industry, having produced several television specials on Michael Jackson. According to E!, Liza and David's wedding, which was held later in Manhattan, cost a whopping USD 3.5 million. At the time of her fourth wedding, Liza was 56 years old and chose to wear a beautiful dress designed by Bob Mackie for her big day. 

It is worth mentioning that Liza and David's relationship wasn't strictly personal. This is because, according to NBC, David served as Liza's manager and was responsible for planning a successful comeback tour for the singer in 2002. Allegedly, their marriage started to deteriorate before they split in 2007. Reports from the time suggested that David accused his wife, Liza, of hi**ing him when she was in an intoxicated state. Although Liza vehemently denied the allegation, the matter escalated further when David filed a lawsuit seeking USD 10 million from her. As a result, Liza countersued her former husband and their legal battle continued for years, ending in 2007 when they finalised a no-fault divorce.
