John Mellencamp has built a decades-long reputation as one of American rock's most enduring storytellers with an unmatched legacy. In his personal life, however, Mellencamp's past has been riddled with three failed marriages, heartbreaks, and a marriage that almost happened.

John Mellencamp married his first wife, Priscilla Esterline, by eloping

This was long before the world would know him for the legend that he is now. John Mellencamp was barely out of his teenage years when he eloped from home and married his high school sweetheart, Priscilla Esterline. The Hurts So Good hitmaker was only 18 and barely finding his ground, not even sure if he wanted a career in music, when he discovered that Priscilla, 21, was pregnant with their first child. The couple got married in 1970 and welcomed their daughter, Michelle, in December of the same year.

John and Priscilla stayed married for 11 years, during which the singer had to spend more time on the road, and it started to take a serious toll on their relationship. In 1981, just a year before his breakout album, American Fool, topped the charts, the couple parted ways. Years later, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 1994, the rockstar hinted that infidelity may have played a part in the divorce. He said:

"How many guys [do] you know in rock bands that have been divorced? There's a reason for that. I don't care who you are or who you think you are, you're gonna fall into the pitfalls of that sooner or later. It's rock & roll. I mean, what other reason would a guy ever pick up a guitar as a teenager?"

Who was his second wife, Victoria Granucci?

Shortly after his divorce from Priscilla, John Mellencamp moved with a new relationship, marrying his second wife, Victoria Granucci, in 1981. From what is known about Victoria, she was an aspiring actress who was also featured in Mellencamp's famous Jack and Diane music video. The couple became parents to two daughters, Teddi Jo, who grew up to be a reality TV sensation, and Justice Mellencamp. 

Similar to his first marriage, his relationship with Victoria, too, fizzled eventually, and after just eight years of marital bliss, they got a divorce in 1989, with Victoria taking Teddi (13) and Justice (8) with her. Reflecting on his second marriage, the Pink Houses rocker told Entertainment Weekly that even though he was already a father of three, mentally, he was still a 19-year-old, and Victoria got tired of being the adult of the house. The singer said:

"Back then I had the best of both worlds. I'd come home to Indiana, had two beautiful kids, a nice wife, the whole bit. Out on the road I was still 19. And (Vicky) just got sick of it. Can't blame her. So I lost my kids. I thought, man, what have I done?"

John Mellencamp had his longest and most stable marriage with his third wife, Elaine Irwin

Mellencamp's third marriage to model Elaine Irwin marked a more grounded and relatively stable phase of his life. The former pair had met through professional ties, when his agency hired Elaine for an appearance in his 1991 music video for Get a Leg Up. Their chemistry soon bloomed into romance, and the two exchanged vows in 1992. 

With Elaine, Mellencamp found the groundedness that he needed to stay level-headed with his flourishing career. This was his longest marriage and perhaps the longest relationship that has now evolved into a lifelong friendship. After staying married for 20 years and raising two sons, Hud and Speck, Mellencamp and Irwin divorced in 2011. Even after their split, the former couple has spoken fondly of each other. The R.O.C.K. in the USA singer once told Howard Stern:

"I was married to Elaine for 20 year. Elaine and I are still good friends." 

When he almost got married the fourth time

Mellencamp has never shied away from owning his flaws. In interviews, he’s described himself as moody, difficult, and far from the perfect partner, often acknowledging how his personality and career impacted his marriages. After three broken marriages, the rockstar had been in a high-profile relationship with actress Meg Ryan, which also included an engagement. After dating on and off since around 2011, couple announced their engagement in December 2018, but the next year, they quietly parted ways, and the marriage never happened. Meg later revealed that after three failed marriages, Mellencamp had his reservations about marrying again. 

Who is his current partner, Kristin Kehrberg?

Kristin is reportedly 15 years younger than Mellencamp, and the pair started dating in 2023. While she prefers to stay away from the spotlight, she is known to be a New York socialite and former film producer, which makes her closely associated with the industry's elites. She has reportedly collaborated with established names in entertainment, having worked on projects like the 2017 rom-com, The Wilde Wedding, starring Glenn Close, Patrick Stewart, Grace Van Patten, and more.

Kristin was previously married to late advertising executive Richard 'Dick' Yarlow. Her relationship with John Mellencamp began through an unexpected meeting at the singer's own apartment. With time, things grew organically between them. Speaking about his lady love, the singer said in a 2023 interview with Maher:

“She's a beautiful 57-year-old woman who just walked into my apartment in New York unexpectedly. She was with a couple of friends. She walked in. She didn't know I was going to be there. I didn't know she was there. We met each other.” 

Unlike his past high-profile romances, Mellencamp's current relationship seems relatively private and far more grounded. This looks like a more mature phase in the rock legend's personal life.
