Diljit Dosanjh won over the hearts of every Indian with his royal representation of India and its versatile culture. The singer graced the MET Gala red carpet on May 5, 2025, in New York and made the debut that will be remembered for years to come. However, did you know the fine craftsmanship of his attire required detailed analysis, long laboured hours and impeccable skills? So, let's take a look at the making of his grand MET Gala outfit.
Diljit Dosanjh had a major moment at the grand red carpet of the MET Gala. The singer's exquisite outfit captured everyone's attention and truly looked phenomenal on him. Diljit's outfit was created by Prabal Gurung, who, in the past, designed outfits for Alia Bhatt, Isha Ambani, Deepika Padukone, and Demi Lovato, among several other stars. The designer took inspiration from the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh.
While we saw the masterpiece come to life on the red carpet, Vogue India has now shared a video of the outfit's making, and it is equally enchanting. The clip revealed that it took fifty craftsmen to create the cape worn by Diljit Dosanjh. The cape that included the map of Punjab with Gurumukhi alphabets embroidered through it was hand embroidered over a period of four days. However, that was not all. The clip shared that the alphabets and the map were hand-embroidered with gold threads on the cape made in pure silk. They further added:
"Peacocks and roses were stitched along with French knot detailing on the silk cape."
In another video posted by Vogue India, one of the stylists, Sohail Mughal, revealed that there were no margins for error in making the royal ensemble for Diljit Dosanjh. He added that the collaboration was for India's supremely talented singer, actor, and global icon, who was marking his debut at the Met Gala 2025, and they had to make sure it was perfect. Sohail further added that understanding the enormity of the project and the responsibility it brought with it, they joined forces with Manisha from Pitambara By Manisha.
Sohail Mughal, in the same conversation, revealed that initially, they had tried to keep the details of the project under wraps. However, when they finally revealed the details to Manisha, she was more than happy to contribute to the royal ensemble. He added that Manisha's knowledge of the culture helped them immensely in bringing the outfit together. He was quoted as saying:

"Recognizing the enormity of the responsibility, we quickly brought in @pitambarabymanisha, a close friend and remarkable designer. Initially, we kept the project details under wraps, but when we finally revealed who we were working with, Manisha enthusiastically responded in her characteristic style, 'Kar denge ji!'—assuring us with humor and confidence that she’d make it happen. Her profound understanding of Punjabi culture and heritage made her an indispensable part of our team."
In an earlier chat with The New York Times, Diljit Dosanjh's stylist revealed that the singer's MET Gala look was based on the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh. She added that they wanted to borrow the diamond necklace weighing 1000 carats for the event which was first commissioned by the Maharaja in 1928 to Cartier. However, they were told that the necklace was sealed in a museum, so she contacted an Indian jeweller to create jewellery inspired by the Maharaja’s collection.
