Ifunanya Nwangene's Death After Snake Bite Was Caused By Medical Aid Delay? Here's What We Know

Aspiring Nigerian singer and The Voice Nigeria alum, Ifunanya Nwangene, also known by her stage name Nanyah, died on January 31, 2026, under tragic circumstances. She was bitten by a snake and was then hospitalised, following which she was pronounced dead. The medical team shared details of their attempts at saving the 26-year-old, which ultimately proved in vain. Her sudden demise has left her family, friends and fans heartbroken. Amid the outpouring of condolences, the account of Ifunanya's heartbreaking final moments surfaced.

How did Ifunanya Nwangene die? Details of her final moments emerged

Ifunanya Nwangene was bitten by a venomous snake in her home in Abuja, Nigeria. The budding singing talent was asleep in her apartment when the snake bite woke her up. Witnesses and footage later shared on social media identified the snake as a cobra. After being bitten, Ifunanya reportedly rushed to a nearby clinic in Lugbe, which did not have antivenom and referred her to another hospital. Reports indicate she visited at least two facilities that lacked the necessary antivenom.

Even at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abuja, where Ifunanya Nwangene eventually arrived, witnesses claimed only one dose was available, even though two were required. Due to the critical delay in treatment, her condition worsened, and she passed away despite efforts to stabilise her. Her death sparked national outrage after reports suggested she visited multiple facilities that lacked the necessary antivenom to save her life. Their official statement by FMC could be read as:

"Despite all efforts to stabilise her condition and transfer her to the ICU for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer. Our team of professionals worked diligently to provide CPR and other life-saving measures; however, despite these efforts, we were unable to revive her."

Amid that, FMC's management denied allegations of negligence, stating that its medical team provided immediate treatment. They mentioned using polyvalent snake antivenom to save Ifunanya, but the efforts went in vain as the venom had already spread extensively. According to them, Ifunanya succumbed to "severe neurotoxic complications" rather than a lack of treatment. Their exact words were:

"The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation."
