Veteran actress-turned-politician, Hema Malini was an iconic figure in Bollywood in the '70s and '80s. The gorgeous star, fondly remembered as 'Dream Girl,' left her mark in the hearts of countless fans. Well, the actress had the good fortune of working with other industry stalwarts during his illustrious career, and among them was the legendary lyricist-filmmaker, Gulzar. Recently, the two renowned personalities bumped into each other on a flight, and Hema took an opportunity to gush about the wonderful moment and their past collaborations.
Hema Malini and Gulzar cemented themselves as icons in the Hindi film industry decades ago. While the former captivated audiences with her acting performances and jaw-dropping looks, the latter mesmerised fans with his soulful lyrics and impactful films. The legends also collaborated on a few spectacular projects together, including Kinara, Khushboo, and Meera. Well, it seems the pair fondly remember their shared experiences on set.
As Hema and Gulzar bumped into each other on a flight to Delhi recently, the former couldn't help but gush about the moment on social media. Taking to her Instagram handle, the diva dropped some adorable glimpses of her and Gulzar at the airport terminal and on the flight. She also penned a heartfelt caption about how they conversed for hours and were so caught up in it that they didn't even realise they had reached their destination.
Further in her caption, Hema also reminisced about the memorable projects they had worked on together. Talking about how their paths had crossed after years, Hema wrote:
"Had such a pleasant, surprise meeting on my flight to Delhi! My travel companion was Gulzar ji, who I met after so many years. It was lovely catching up with him all those years, plus recalling the wonderful movies we had made together - Meera, Khushboo, Kinara etc. We had so much to talk about that we were still discussing when we landed in Delhi."
Earlier, at an event, Hema Malini had recalled various anecdotes from her experience working with Gulzar. The actress talked about a time when the lyricist-director had wanted to cast her in a non-glamourous role. According to the actress, heroines in her day were known for their heavy makeup and extravagant hair-dos, but Gulzar had wanted his leading lady to look more authentic.

In fact, Gulzar once provided Hema with a costume comprising a simple saree and an unmatching blouse for the film, Khusboo. The lacklustre ensemble had even shocked the actress' mother, who stated that the outfit should be 'more glamorous.' However, the director immediately shut down the suggestion and even refused to let his actress don a wig.
At the same event, Hema Malini opened up about how Gulzar had helped to grow as an actress. She revealed that she initially had the habit of speaking fast in front of the camera. Well, Gulzar would always correct her in those instances by asking her where she was rushing to go. When the actress would respond that she had another shoot, Gulzar said:
"Shoot will happen later, first you speak slowly here."
Hema confessed that she had struggled a lot to reduce her speed, but eventually she had succeeded. However, another problem she had to overcome was her expressions. As a trained dancer, Hema was used to moving her eyebrows a lot. However, Gulzar wanted more natural expressions, so he would ask the actress to do multiple takes until she got it just right. In Hema's words:
"He would say, 'Your eyebrow is dancing.' Then I would control myself and speak."
What do you think about Hema Malini's heartfelt note about her meeting with Gulzar?
