Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have established a thrilling anthology series, Monster, by depicting stories based on high-profile true crimes. After covering the gruesome case of Jeffrey Dahmer in the first season and the confusing case of the Menendez brothers in the second season, the director and writer duo are back to tell the story of the serial killer, Ed Gein.

However, the writer-director duo want to explore how Ed Gein influenced pop culture and his crimes inspired a generation of horror and slasher flicks around the world, especially Hollywood. Amid this, there has been a newfound interest in Ed Gein's story, with Charlie Hunnam playing the role of the infamous 'Butcher of Plainfield'. Hence, here's everything to know about how Ed Gein was caught for his crimes and how he died. 

Ed Gein's crimes before he was caught

A farmer, carpenter, tanner, and a local of 1950s rural Wisconsin, Ed Gein did all sorts of odd jobs around town. However, after the disappearance of 58-year-old Bernice Worden, the police's search led them to the dilapidated and secluded farm of Ed Gein, who lived in isolation. The details of what the authorities found in the residence still send shivers down the spines of people. Apart from the old woman's body, the police found the house full of furniture, made up of human leather. However, this was just the beginning of the horror show that the authorities witnessed in Ed's isolated farmhouse.

Ed Gein had started to rob graves after the death of his mother, who he was said to be obsessed with. In a state of daze, he targeted the graves of women who were near his mother's age. After exhuming the deceased bodies, he used his expertise as a tanner to create his horrifying furniture. Ed had acknowledged killing two women, Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan, apart from grave robbing. 

How was Ed Gein caught and linked to the crimes? 

Bernice Worden, the last victim of Ed Gein, was the mother of the  Deputy Sheriff, Frank Worden. After her disappearance, the Deputy Sheriff launched an investigation after he found blood stains on his mother's store, from where she vanished. He also noticed that the last receipt she had written was for Ed Gein, meaning he was the last customer in the store. This led investigators to his farmhouse. Hence, searching his farmhouse revealed to the police the depth of Ed Gein's monstrous nature.

What happened to Ed Gein after his crimes were revealed? 

In a shocking turn of events, Ed Gein was ruled 'not guilty'. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was found to be incompetent for a trial. However, after doctors stated that he was able enough to participate in the defence, Ed was found guilty. However, a second trial ruled him out as 'not guilty by reason of insanity'. 

How did Ed Gein die?

Although Ed Gein did not serve a sentence in jail, he was still confined to a mental asylum for the rest of his life, given the court's passing a judgment on his 'insanity'. Ed stayed in the Mendota Mental Health Institute until his death at the age of 77 due to lung cancer. Ed Gein's grave lies between those of his family members. However, after the gravestone was chipped away by tourists as souvenirs and the stone itself was robbed, Ed lies in an unmarked grave in his hometown in Plainfield, Wisconsin. 

What happened to Ed Gein's farmhouse of horror? 

Talking about Ed Gein's infamous property and the horrifying paraphernalia inside, the property and everything inside it were set to be auctioned and would have been turned into a tourist attraction. However, ten days before the auction could take place, the property was burnt to the ground due to an 'accidental fire'. Though people suspected it to be a case of purposeful arson, the cause was never determined. Interestingly, Frank Worden was the Fire Chief around that time. He was also the son of Ed Gein's last victim, Bernice Worden.
