Nancy Guthrie's disappearance has left investigators and the public in the dark. After more than 14 days of her disappearance, there is no clue in sight, and there is a continued threat to the 84-year-old's safety. Nancy, the mother of NBC's Today co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, went missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home on January 31, 2026. Since then, the investigation has been directed towards the possibility that she might have been abducted. But despite extensive searches, forensic testing, and thousands of public tips, law enforcement has found no conclusive evidence of her location. Amid the uncertainty, the Pima County Sheriff recently shared his estimate on how long it might take to find Nancy. 

How long would it take to find Nancy Guthrie? 

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos sat down with The New York Times for a conversation and addressed the investigation's timeline. He admitted that there is no predictable timeline for finding Nancy Guthrie' and that it could even take an hour, a day, months, or years to finally locate Nancy. For those unaware, CNN reported that the cops have been working continuously, reviewing surveillance footage, collecting DNA samples, and analyzing evidence such as gloves found near Nancy's home. At the same time, the FBI is following leads and looking for a masked man seen outside Nancy's home. In his words: 

"Maybe it's an hour from now, maybe it's weeks or months or years from now."

Furthermore, he reassured the public that, despite the uncertainty, they are doing their best to find Nancy and will continue to do so. His comments highlighted the reality of a complex abduction before them. Especially when they have limited leads and no significant direction. Moreover, the forensic evidence would also require extensive analysis, which could take weeks. Sharing how the emotional and physical toll of the search has been immense, he said:

"It's exhausting, these ups and downs. But we will keep moving forward."

Who is Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos? 

Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos is a veteran law enforcement officer with nearly five decades of experience. According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, he began his career in 1976 with the El Paso Police Department. Eventually, he joined the Pima County Sheriff's Department in 1984. Over the years, he held various ranks before being appointed sheriff in 2015. He was later elected to the position in 2020 and narrowly re-elected in 2024. Chris has witnessed several major, high-profile investigations during his career, including the investigation into the Gabby Giffords shooting. Such cases established his reputation in handling sensitive and complex criminal cases.

How did the Nancy Guthrie case create a rift between local investigators and the FBI? 

Nancy Guthrie's case has been under investigation by local authorities and the FBI. According to Reuters and Fox News Digital, several disagreements emerged over where key forensic evidence should be analyzed. The FBI reportedly requested that certain DNA evidence and recovered gloves be sent to its national crime lab in Quantico, Virginia, for advanced testing. Instead, Chris chose to send the evidence to a private laboratory in Florida that had previously worked with his department. Some Federal sources suggested this decision could slow parts of the investigation, whereas Chris defended his decision, saying that maintaining consistency with the same lab was necessary for accurate results.
