Earlier, Lily Allen told The Sunday Times that her songs in West End Girl were based on her real-life experiences, making fans believe that her new album described the reason behind her divorce. According to the same song, she initially found out about David's alleged cheating after reading a text message on his phone. Some parts of the moment were mentioned in her track, Tennis, where she sang:

Soon after reading the messages, it reportedly prompted Lily to confront David, heightening her suspicions that he was hiding something unknown to her. In her interview, Lily added that the album's theme included some personal moments she experienced in life. Yet, the story doesn't end there. The Sun reported that Lily allegedly discovered David's secret profile on the dating app, Raya. Incidentally, it was the same app where the couple initially met and matched. 

Lily joined the platform again to cross-check his profile and search for him. Soon her search increased and she felt that David might have crossed the boundaries of their open marriage. Later, these findings shaped her wish to write songs, such as Madeline and more, where she reveals evidence of his 'double-life.'

Lily Allen and David Harbour's open marriage, which once seemed unconventional, had reportedly fallen apart due to emotional distance and his crossing of the terms they had agreed upon. In the West End Girl, Lily hints that they had decided that none of them would get involved in an emotional relationship outside the marriage, yet David broke the rules. 

Her lyrics, "Be discreet and don't be blatant / It had to be with strangers," suggest that the Stranger Things actor allegedly pushed past what they had agreed upon. Moreover, in another interview with British Vogue, Lily pointed out that she went through severe emotional turmoil after the split. Whereas David mentioned that he was using the time as a 'period of growth' to focus on work and learn how to gradually return to normal life after the painful end of their marriage.

Despite the tragic end of their love story, Lily and David Harbour first met on the exclusive dating app Raya in 2019 and instantly felt a connection.
