Dharmendra in Bollywood had a career spanning more than 6 decades and appeared in more than 300 movies. Now, Simi Grewal, best known for her show, Rendezvous, a while back, revisited her old interview of Hema Malini and Dharmendra's love story. The actress had spoken of her love story and shared her meeting with Dharmendra at the premiere of one of the films. She thought she had never seen such a handsome man in her life. The actress was then asked if she ever resisted falling for him, as he was married to Prakash Kaur. Hema Malini said:

"I never bothered in the beginning but in my mind I used to think if at all I marry somebody it must be like him. Not him but it happens. But he constantly used to say that he loves me a lot. I used to say ok and never used to give him much lift knowing the whole consequences."

When Hema Malini revealed what convinced her that Dharmendra was her dream man

It was during the 1970s that Dharmendra became very close to Hema Malini. The duo had done an array of movies such as Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu and their blockbuster movie, Sholay. Their reel-life chemistry soon turned into a real-life relationship. When Hema was asked what convinced him that he was the right man, she said that it was destined like that. In her words:

"We were together for so long so now to suddenly think of that I want to marry somebody else; I don't think it was right. I called him and said you have to marry me now. He said ya I will marry you. So that is how it happened."

Hema Malini also said that in love, one is only supposed to give. One does not have the right to demand things. When Simi asked the actress if she ever tried to compete with Dharmendra's other family members for his time and attention, she said that she never bothered, irritated, or tortured him with these expectations. Hema remarked:

"You love a person so much and you got so much of love from a person so how can you torture a person for such small petty things? I want the love to continue so that is how we love each other so much. Nothing can come between us. I understand his problems. I adjust everything according to him for which he loves me more. When I give so much you get so much. You have to give respect to this love."

Back in the 1980s, some reports claimed that Dharmendra and Hema Malini had converted to Islam to solemnise their wedding under the Muslim personal law. However, both of them had denied all the claims.
