Voted among the ten most handsome men in the world in the '70s, Dharmendra is still considered the iconic actor of Bollywood. The Punjabi munda fell madly in love with the southern beauty, Hema Malini, while he was already married to Prakash Kaur. Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur tied the knot in 1957, and despite that, the actor married Hema Malini after allegedly converting to Islam, so that he could keep his two marriages.
It was on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawan when Dharmendra fell madly in love with Hema Malini. After tying the knot with Hema, Dharmendra bought a home for Hema, where she lived with her daughters, Esha Deol and Ahaana Deol. However, his first wife, Prakash Kaur, lives in Dharmendra’s paternal house along with Sunny Deol and his family.

In her autobiography, Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, the veteran actress discussed her unconventional marriage and the emotional turmoil she faced when she married him. The actress mentioned facing harsh judgments and accusations from people. Talking about the same, she said:
“Fingers were pointed. Accusations were flung at us. I knew people discussed me behind my back. I just knew that he made me happy. And all I wanted was happiness.”

She also addressed the notion people had that her unconventional marriage with Dharmendra left her alone. Talking about the same, she stated that Dharmendra fulfilled all his duties as a father, and she doesn’t want to prove anything to the public. Elaborating on the same, Hema stated that she cannot keep track of him or how many times he visits her house. She ascertained that Dharmendra knows his duties and that she never had to remind him about them.

In her biography, Hema Malini: The Dream Girl, Hema revealed that she never met Dharmendra's first wife, Prakash Kaur, after their wedding. She also revealed the reason behind not living with Dharmendra after marriage and shared:
"I didn’t want to disturb anyone. I am happy with whatever Dharamji did for me and my daughters. He played the role of a father, like any father would do. I guess I am happy with that.”

Earlier, Hema Malini spoke about her unconventional marriage with the veteran actor and revealed that she has accepted it without sulking. Talking to Lehren Retro, Hema shared:
“Nobody wants to live like this. But automatically, what happens, you have to accept. I am not sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up well."
