Harshvardhan Rane Ran Away From Home At 16, Worked As Waiter, Joined Call Center To Learn English

A popular name in the entertainment world, Harshvardhan Rane swooned many when he made his Hindi film debut in 2016 with the romantic drama, Sanam Teri Kasam. Born in Andhra Pradesh to a Telugu mother and a Marathi father, Harshvardhan ventured into acting with the television show, Left Right Left. 

Harshvardhan is a popular name in the South film industry, and even before making his big Bollywood debut, he worked with acclaimed actresses like Genelia D’Souza and Nayanthara. His Bollywood debut, Sanam Teri Kasam, in 2016 garnered him a lot of attention and applause from critics and audiences. Rane has ranked in the Times’ 50 Most Desirable Men list and is the first Indian actor to own a campervan.

Harshvardhan Rane ran away from his home at the age of 16

Harshvardhan always wanted to be an actor and escape from the tag of a small-towner, so he ran away from his home in Gwalior and took the first train to Delhi because that was the only fare he could afford. Harsh was just 16 when he ran away from his home with Rs. 200 in his pocket.

Harshvardhan Rane worked as a waiter and courier boy

To survive in Delhi, Harshvardhan did many odd jobs since he had no educational qualification. His first job was in an STD booth in Delhi, where he got Rs. 10 for a day. Soon, he got a job at a cyber café where he earned Rs. 20. In an interview with Free Press Journal, Harsh spoke about doing odd jobs to survive and said that between 2002 and 2004, he worked as a waiter, a courier boy, at an STD booth, cyber café and even assisted a DJ.

Harshvardhan Rane joined a call centre to learn English

Harshvardhan was not so proficient in English and wanted to learn the language. However, he could not afford any coaching classes, so he joined a call centre to get training in English. In the same interview with Free Press Journal, the actor revealed:

“That time people would say it's important to learn English. It then became my goal to learn the language. I looked around for coaching classes, but I didn't have money to pay for them. So, I joined a call centre. At call centres, they used to give training in soft skills and English."

Harshvardhan Rane cracked his call centre interview by listening to radio and English news channels

To crack a call centre interview, Harshvardhan worked really hard as he would listen to radio or English news channels. Recalling how important it was for him to crack the interview, Harsh said:

“To reach the level of call centre English, I used to listen to radio or CNN UK or CNN America. After five-six months, I cracked an interview. I jumped call centres to get the training and learn English for free; and got paid for it too! Back then, English was of utmost importance.”

Harshvardhan Rane begged for the role in 'Sanam Teri Kasam' as he was four months late for the auditions

Harshvardhan Rane is on cloud nine as his debut film, Sanam Teri Kasam, was re-released in the theatres and created history by earning 170 per cent of its original collection. When the film was released in 2016, it could not make much profit, but since its re-release, the film has been making waves in the theatre.

In an interview with IANS, Harshvardhan spoke about bagging the lead role in the film. The actor revealed that he begged for the role since he was four months late for the auditions. Recalling how he convinced the makers, Harsh said:

“I have begged and pleaded to get this film. Of course, I was extremely convinced about the role. I reached the audition 4 months late and the casting was already done. They asked me to leave the office and not to waste my time. I said, 'Please, just watch my audition. I am ready to do it here'. They said, 'You are wasting your time because the guy, who has been selected, is sitting in the next office. And the hero is reading the script’. After a lot of requests, he agreed and his assistant Ravi ji took my audition".
