Haq, the courtroom drama has been grabbing a lot of attention for the last few months. It is all because of the gripping storyline and strong performances of Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam. On January 2, 2026, the courtroom drama inspired by the Shah Bano case was released on Netflix. Amid the rising success of the film, Haq, directed by Suparn S. Varma, people have become curious to know more about the real-life couple, Shah Bano and her husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan.

In a 2017 interview with The Quint, Shah Bano’s youngest son, Jameel Ahmad, shared that his mother was 60 years old when she got divorced from her husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan in 1979. So that means she was born in 1919. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Shah Bano’s husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan, a reputed lawyer of Indore, died in 2006 and was 94 when he passed away. Thus, it means that Ahmed was born in 1912. If the report is believed to be true, then the Muslim couple shared an age gap of 7 years.
The renowned lawyer of Indore, Mohammed Ahmed Khan, married twice. He got married to Shah Bano in 1932. However, years later, he remarried a younger woman. In an interview with The Quint, Shah Bano’s youngest son, Jameel Ahmad, revealed that his father’s second wife was 14 years younger to him. He also revealed why his father decided to divorce his mother, Shah Bano. He was quoted as saying:
"My father got married twice, and my mother, Shah Bano, was his first wife. The second wife of my father was 14 years younger than him. Both ladies used to fight endlessly over trivial issues. That was the reason why my father decided to divorce my mother."

The film, Haq, is inspired by the landmark case of Shah Bano, a Muslim woman who knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court of India after she was abandoned by her husband. Not only did her husband leave her, but he also abandoned their five children, including three sons and two daughters. The courtroom drama is based on Jigna Vora’s book, Bano: Bharat ki Beti.
