'Haq' Movie, What Happened To Shah Bano's Husband In Real Life? She Had Warned, 'You Will Never..'

Haq, released on November 7, 2025, has reignited the conversation about the 1985 Shah Bano case. Based on the famous court proceedings where a wife fought for her financial rights against her ex-husband, the film loosely depicts Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case. After this incident, a domino effect started in Indian law and politics. What actually happened to Shah Bano's husband, Ahmad Khan, who was a lawyer himself?

What happened to Shah Bano's ex-husband, Ahmad Khan, after the 1985 case?

Shah Bano's husband of fourteen years, Mohd. Ahmed Khan tied the knot to a younger woman and brought his second wife home. Years later, he then asked Bano to leave the place she had called her home for years, along with her children. They had been married for nearly three decades, and Shah Bano was 62 at the time. Ahmed then divorced his first wife by means of triple talaq. He also refused to pay her spousal maintenance even though Bano had no other means to sustain herself financially. She took her ex-husband to court over this.

This case started a domino effect that would end up changing the socio-political landscape of India forever. Although the judgment was later reversed, the Supreme Court of India had initially ruled in favour of Shah Bano. Mohd. Ahmed Khan, who was a lawyer himself, found himself dragged to court and fought against his ex-wife. In a 2016 interview, Shah Bano's daughter revealed what happened to her lawyer-father after he initially lost the case.

Siddiqua Ahmad shared that her mother, Shah Bano, was so angry at Ahmed that she had warned him about going to court. She had threatened the lawyer that if she went to court and fought the case, then he would never be able to put on his black coat again. Siddiqua revealed that is what happened to her father at the end. After losing the case, Ahmed Khan stopped practising law and saw it as an insult. She also revealed that after the case proceedings began, Ahmed stopped talking to his children from his ex-wife. They once met at a funeral, too, but did not speak.
