'Haq' Early Review, Netizens Say The Courtroom Drama, Starring Emraan And Yami, 'A Must Watch'

Haq, the courtroom drama inspired by the landmark case of Shah Bano Begum, is all set to hit the theatres soon. For the unversed, the film is scheduled for release on November 7, 2025. Recently, the film starring Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam faced a legal issue from the heirs of Shah Bano. According to them, the makers of Haq did not obtain any consent and breached privacy. However, the Madhya Pradesh HC has now dismissed their claims and given the courtroom drama a green signal.

What to expect in Suparn Varma's directorial, Haq?

Haq, the courtroom drama directed by Suparn S. Varma, is inspired by the real-life struggle story of Shah Bano Begum, a Muslim woman who fought the most talked-about legal battle in the late 1970s against her husband, Mohammed Ahmad Khan. For the uninitiated, Shah Bano was married to Mohammed Ahmad Khan, a famous lawyer from Indore. After more than 3 decades of marriage, Mohammed Ahmad Khan abandoned Shah Bano and their five children.

This thing led her to the Supreme Court door to seek justice. The landmark case, Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum became a historic moment in India, sparking nationwide debates on women’s rights and Muslim personal law. In Suparn S. Varma’s directorial, Haq, Yami Gautam portrays 'Shazia Bano', a character based on Shah Bano Begum, and Emraan Hashmi plays her husband, 'Abbas', and also the rival lawyer in court.

The story not only features Shah Bano’s emotional and social turmoil but also her impressive courage as a woman standing up for equality. Haq is a fictionalised version of Shah Bano Begum’s case, adapted from Jigna Vora’s book, Bano: Bharat Ki Beti. While dramatised, the courtroom drama stays true to the essence of Shah Bano’s battle for justice.
