Hansal Mehta Married Safeena After 17 Yrs Of Companionship, Performed First Wife Sunita's Last Rites

Hansal Mehta is a popular filmmaker in Indian cinema who has some acclaimed projects to his name. He started his career in 1993 by directing the popular cookery show on TV, Khana Khazana. The show made chef, Sanjeev Kapoor a star overnight. Hansal went on to direct shows like Amrita, Highway, Yaadein, Lakshya, Neeti and a few others.

The filmmaker made his directorial debut with the film, Jayate, which was followed by Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar. Over the years, Hansal has made films that deal with many socio-political topics and won huge applause. Be it Shahid or Aligarh, Hansal’s films explored societal issues and human complexities. His other projects include The Buckingham Murders, Scam 1992, Scoop, Lootere, Scam 2003 and many others.

Just like his professional life, Hansal Mehta’s personal life, too, has made headlines. The ace filmmaker, who parted ways with his first wife, Sunita, tied the knot for the second time with his girlfriend, Safeena, after 17 years of companionship. Read on to learn more about their love story.

Hansal Mehta’s first marriage at the age of 21

Just like the traditional Indian families of the '60s and '70s, Hansal Mehta got into the matrimony quite early in his life. After completing his engineering degree, Hansal Mehta married Sunita at the age of 21. Before venturing into films, Hansal worked in an Australian company but soon left the job as it turned monotonous.

After marriage, Hansal and Sunita became proud parents to two sons, Jay and Pallava. However, when Hansal left his job and tried to focus his career on films, problems started cropping up in his life, and he parted ways with his first wife, Sunita, after 11 years of marriage.

However, despite their divorce, Sunita and Hansal remained cordial with each other and co-parented their kids. He even performed the last rites of Sunita when she passed away in 2015 due to cancer. Once, in an interaction with Siddharth Kannan, the ace filmmaker spoke about his first wife and said:

“My parents not only looked after me and my children, they looked after Sunita too. Sunita’s relationship with me never ended on a bitter note. When she was alive, we used to talk. She had health issues, when she would be worried about things, she would talk to me. We never turned our relationship into enmity. We did get separated but I did her last rites as her husband.”

Hansal Mehta faced a period of struggle when his films were not doing well at the box office. To get over the same, he took the support of alcohol. It was at that moment he met Safeena Hussain, daughter of veteran actor, Yusuf Hussain. Yusuf is known for his work in films like Dhoom 2, OMG – Oh My God, Raees and a few others.

It was Safeena, who brought stability to Hansal’s life. The duo fell in love and lived together for 17 years. The couple welcomed two daughters, Kimaya and Rehana, into their lives before marriage. Since both Hansal and Safeena had experienced marriage in their lives, they thought it irrelevant and stayed as ‘companions’. After a courtship of 17 years, Hansal and Safeena decided to get married in 2022 in a private ceremony in California.

Who is Safeena Hussain?

Apart from being the daughter of veteran actor Yusuf Hussain, Safeena is a professional social worker, and the founder of the famous non-profit organisation Educate Girls. The organisation works towards providing adequate and proper education to girls in the rural areas of India. Safeena has won numerous titles and accolades for her incredible work in lifting rural girls and her constant efforts towards their development.
