Gufi Paintal passed away at the age of 79 on June 5, 2023. The heartbreaking news of his demise has broken the internet, as people and renowned celebrities are mourning the loss of such an incredible actor, writer and director. Gufi was widely recognised for his exceptional portrayal of ‘Mama Shakuni’ in the Mahabharat adaptation by legendary filmmakers, BR Chopra and Ravi Chopra. The way he played the character simply cemented his stature as one of the finest actors ever.
Gufi Paintal’s association with the character of 'Shakuni Mama' was so strong that he even hosted a political discussion show on the Sahara Samay news channel while portraying 'Shakuni'. It was Gufi’s family, who confirmed his demise in a statement given to the Indian Express. In the official statement, the family mentioned that the veteran actor passed away on the morning of June 5, 2023, in a peaceful manner. The statement can be read as:
"With profound grief we announce the sad demise of our father Mr Gufi Paintal (Shakuni Mama). He passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family."

Gufi Paintal’s nephew, Hiten Paintal, in a conversation with the Indian Express, opened up about the reason behind the actor’s death. The doting nephew revealed that the veteran actor was admitted to the hospital for a few days due to age-related health issues. However, he continued saying that on June 5, 2023, he passed away after he got a heart attack. The actor was admitted to the hospital on May 31, 2023, but despite doctors’ best efforts, Gufi wasn’t showing any signs of recovery.
Apart from his acting prowess, Gufi Paintal also showcased his directorial skills in various TV shows and in the film, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was associated with BR Films, where he served as an associate director, and casting director and even worked as the production designer. Notably, Gufi was the brother of the renowned comedian, Kanwarjit Paintal, who achieved fame through his roles in films like Satte Pe Satta, Rafoo Chakkar, Parichay, and many others. The industry mourns the loss of a multi-talented artist who contributed significantly to the entertainment world.

The late legendary actor, Gufi Paintal was originally an engineer. However, he eventually pursued a career in acting after he got influenced by his younger brother, Kanwarjit Paintal's training at the Film and Television Institute of India. After arriving in Bombay in 1969, Gufi ventured into modelling, worked as an assistant director, and even appeared in numerous films and television serials. Not only this, he even directed his brother, Kanwarjit Paintal, showcasing his versatility and talent within the industry. Gufi Paintal's journey from engineering to acting remains an interesting aspect of his career.
