Govinda is one of the most commonly recognised actors from the '80s and '90s. His comic timing and acting prowess quickly made his popularity rise. Despite being one of the leading mainstream actors, his personal life was under wraps. For the unversed, Govinda didn't announce he was married in the initial years of his career, and his wife, Sunita, was always away from the media spotlight. In a new interview, Sunita Ahuja, who has been with the actor for more than 40 years, revealed how she first met the actor when she was 15.
Govinda starred in several movies with interesting romantic plots, but his real-life love story was no less than any of his films. Sunita Ahuja recently appeared on the podcast, Time Out with Ankit. During the conversation, she shared that her sister was married to Govinda's maternal uncle, Anand Singh. For the unversed, Anand Singh was the director who launched Govinda in the industry in 1986. So, Sunita Munjal, who became Sunita Ahuja after marriage, met the actor at her sister's wedding. She revealed that she was 15 and in class 9 when she met 21-year-old Govinda, who was in the final year of his B.com degree. She was quoted as saying:

"My sister married his maternal uncle and I saw him for the first time at their wedding. He was in his final year of BCom, and I was in Class 9. My brother-in-law told me that Govinda was from Virar, a simple man who loved his mother a lot."
Sunita explained that her brother-in-law told him that no girl could impress Govinda. So, she took the challenge and spent a year wooing him before they began dating. The couple dated for three years before they tied the knot in 1987 when she was 18. In her words:
"My brother-in-law mentioned that no girl could impress him. I remember wondering what kind of boy he was and that no girl could impress him. When I told my brother-in-law I could, he said it was impossible. So, I asked him what if I did, and he challenged me to prove it first."
Govinda secured his first role in Anand Singh's Tan Badan in 1986. In the same conversation, Sunita mentioned that when Govinda began working on the film, her brother-in-law offered her the chance to play the female lead. However, she declined the role because being a lead actress would bring a lot of workload. Later, after the filming began for the film, she began dating Govinda. Explaining the incident, she said:
"On the day of the Muhurat, Govinda, my brother, and I were coming in a car together. My brother was seated in the middle, and when I rested my hand on the headrest, I noticed Govinda's hand there as well. I realised he was subtly touching mine. My immediate thought was to catch him right away. That's how our affair began."
Govinda went on to become a big star, but he wasn't that popular when he got married to Sunita. Recalling the incident, she shared that she didn't find him attractive and even looked down upon him as she was brought up in a more wealthy household of Bandra. When the couple met Govinda's mom, she wanted to see him get married soon. As a result, the couple quickly tied the knot when she was 18 and welcomed their first child a year later.
