Govinda Once Decided To Part Ways With Sunita To Marry Neelam Kothari, 'I Asked Sunita To Leave Me'

He is the Hero No. 1 of Bollywood and is still hailed for his bindaas dance moves. Govinda was the quintessential hero of the Hindi cinema and was the leading name in the 90s. He has appeared in more than 165 Hindi films in a career that lasted more than three decades. With films like Dulhe Raja, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Partner, Bhagam Bhag, and many more, Govinda proved his versatility as an actor.

On the personal front, the actor is married to his girlfriend, Sunita Munjal, and the couple is the proud parents of Tina Ahuja and Yashvardhan Ahuja. Govinda kept the news of his marriage to Sunita a secret for four years as he didn’t want the news of his marriage to hamper his career. At that time, Govinda was 24 and Sunita was 18.

And now, as per the recent news, Govinda and Sunita are reportedly heading for divorce after 37 years of marriage. Unnamed sources claim that Govinda and Sunita are in the final stages of their divorce. The couple’s ongoing disagreements and different lifestyle choices are one of the reasons for their separation. Sources also claim that Govinda’s closeness to a 30-year-old Marathi actress is another reason.

This is not the first time that Govinda’s marriage has faced hurdles. The couple’s marriage has overcome many challenges over the years, including his affairs and linkup rumours. However, throughout these tough times, Sunita has always stood firm with Govinda. Talking about Govinda’s linkups, he was once madly in love with actress, Neelam Kothari, so much that he was ready to leave Sunita. Let us read on to know what exactly happened.

Govinda’s affair with Neelam

Govinda first met Neelam during the shooting of his debut film, Ilzaam, in 1986. Their on-screen chemistry was unmatched, and fans loved seeing them together. Govinda was mesmerised by Neelam’s beauty, and the duo formed a great off-screen bond, too. Govinda was dating Sunita back then, and he would often compare her with Neelam and even try to mould her to become like the actress.

His constant comparisons to Neelam irked his then-girlfriend, Sunita, that she would get into arguments with the actor. During one of those arguments, Govinda decided to part ways with Sunita and broke his engagement. In an old interview with Stardust, Govinda spoke about the same and said:

“We had constant fights. In one of those fights, Sunita said something about Neelam, and I lost my head and called it quits. I asked Sunita to leave me. I broke off my engagement with her. And had Sunita not called me after five days and coaxed me into it again, I would probably have married Neelam.”

Govinda and Sunita’s love story

Sunita’s elder sister is married to Govinda’s maternal uncle, and that is how Govinda and Sunita connected. During his struggling days, he stayed with his uncle and Sunita would often visit her sister. The two were entirely opposite to each other as she was Bandra girl and he was a humble desi guy. But their common love for dancing connected them. While spending time with one another, the duo fell in love.

Soon, they started sending love letters to each other, and one day, her mother caught one of the letters. Govinda's mother, Nirmala Devi, was very fond of Sunita, so when Sunita’s mother spoke to Nirmala Devi about Govinda and Sunita, she supported their relationship. The couple got married on March 11, 1987, in a private ceremony.

Govinda and Sunita renewed their wedding vows

Since Govinda kept his marriage to Sunita a secret as his career would have been sabotaged, the actor remarried Sunita on their 25th anniversary. It was Govinda's mother, Nirmala Devi's last wish that he get married to Sunita again. In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Govinda had said:

"It was my mother's wish that I re-marry Sunita, only when I reach the age of 49. My mother had specified that Sunita and I can go through a sampoorna vivah (complete wedding) only after 25 years of our togetherness. So we had just gone through a formal Gandharva Vivah back in 1987. I completed 49 in December 2014 and in January we went through a full-fledged wedding."

Govinda and Sunita have overcome many hurdles in their life. They have been each other’s strongest pillars of strength over the years.
