Govinda Exploited His Relationship With Neelam For Career, 'Should Have Told Her That I Was Married'

Govinda and Neelam were a hit jodi in Bollywood back in the 90s. The duo had worked in some of the most iconic films, and their unbeatable on-screen chemistry had simply won the hearts of the audience. Govinda was mesmerised by Neelam and her beauty. Soon, their friendship turned into love, and both of them were head over heels in love with one another.

Govinda met Neelam for the first time when the latter arrived at a producer’s office, where he too was present. Neelam’s drop-dead gorgeous looks was the first element of attraction Govinda felt for her. However, he was afraid and shy of making the first move towards her, since he was aware of Neelam’s intellectual quotient, as compared to his bare minimum, rather embarrassing knowledge of the English language.

Govinda broke his engagement with Sunita for Neelam

On the contrary, Govinda was already engaged to his girlfriend, Sunita. The two were a hit pair back then and this was one of the major reasons why he didn’t tell Neelam about his engagement. However, his close proximity with Neelam took a toll on his relationship with Sunita. He would praise Neelam and often compared Sunita with her.

While Govinda had gradually fallen in love with Neelam, on the other hand, he was aware of his burdening engagement to his fiancee, Sunita Ahuja, which he started to detest. In fact, totally charmed with Neelam, he now wished if his fiance would start behaving like Neelam, so that he may still find a reason to be with her. As the merciless comparisons with Neelam increased, Sunita lost her temper and said something about Neelam, after which Govinda broke off his engagement with her.

Govinda exploited his relationship with Neelam for professional gains

However, after a few days, Sunita called Govinda and the two reconciled. The two had an intimate wedding in a temple and kept the news of their marriage a secret. Since the news of his marriage would have affected his flourishing career, he decided not to disclose the same. In the same interview with Stardust, Govinda shared that he played dirty by not informing Neelam, whom he loved passionately, about his marriage with Sunita. In his words:

“Neither did Neelam know about it. She got to know only after a year. I probably did not tell her because I did not want to break this successful screen pair. And to be honest, to a certain extent, I did exploit my personal relationship with Neelam for professional ends. I played dirty with her. I should have told her that I was married.”

Govinda revealed he wanted to marry Neelam

Govinda was quite vocal about his feelings for Neelam and how he always wished to marry her. He revealed how he considered her as the ideal woman in his life, and further highlighted how he had already started to visualise her as his wife. Speaking about the same in an old interview, Govinda stated:

“Yes, I wanted to marry her. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Neelam was the ideal girl, the kind every man visualises for a life-partner. The kind of girl I wanted. But that was getting emotional. There was another practical side. Just because I had fallen in love elsewhere, I couldn’t overlook my commitment towards Sunita. If there was no sense of duty in a man, this would go on. Leave one for another and another for another."

But Neelam, on the other hand, never wished to marry Govinda as her priority was always her career. She was too ambitious and whenever Govinda mentioned his desire to marry her, she would laugh it off. She wished to be the number one actress in Bollywood and once spoke about the rumours of her affair with Govinda. The actress clearly stated that it wasn't a relationship and added that rumours were part of every actor's life back in those days as there was no one to clarify.
