Golconda Blue to be auctioned in Geneva

The Golconda Blue Diamond would be sold at the Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction held in Geneva on May 14, 2025. This stunning diamond piece has a rare size, is pure, and only a handful of them exist in the world. For the unversed, the name of the diamond got inspired by the famous Golconda area of Telangana, where the Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, and Darya-i-Noor, which have been the world-famous diamonds, were discovered.

Now, Rahul Kadakia, who is the International Head of Jewellery, Christie's, where the diamond would be auctioned, shared that this would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bid. The Golconda Blue Diamond is known for its royal pedigree, extraordinary colour and exceptional weight.

The Golconda Blue diamond was used by Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II of Indore

It is said that the Golconda Blue Diamond was first owned by Maharaja Yeshwant Rao Holkar II of Indore, who was an open-minded monarch and adored fashion, contemporary art, and western culture. The Golconda diamond was got by the Maharaja's dad back in 1923 and was first set by Chaumet, an iconic French house, in the form of a two-stone bracelet. It was then during the 1930s that the Golconda Blue was remade by the Indore Pears as a necklace. It had the taste of Indian royalness and with a dash of European élan. When the princely states of India were dissolved after India gained Independence in 1947, the Golconda Blue was then possessed by Harry Winston, an American jeweller.

Harry, who had worked with some of the finest gemstones, remade the diamond in the form of a broach and paired it up with a big white diamond. The uniqueness of the same was maintained, and it became an elegant, fashionable piece. The Maharaja of Baroda, who was a royal collector, took the piece. Golconda Blue Diamond's return at the auction will prove that history buffs, jewellery collectors, and lovers will surely have a great opportunity to look at a piece of art that has a history. For the first time, the rare diamond would be up for sale, and the public auction is set to take place at Geneva's Four Seasons Hotel Des Berge. It is a place where high-end jewellery, which is unusual, has its sales. The Golconda Blue can be one of the most uniquely traded coloured diamonds in History and whoever purchases it would surely be a symbol of a royal heirloom where agelessness would take a front seat.
