Game of Thrones' Season 1 began over a decade ago and has since amassed a huge number of fans. If you, too, are a fan of the popular Game of Thrones franchise, we have good news to share. On November 20, 2025, the renewal of two beloved prequels of the show, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, was announced. This is not all, as the author, George R.R. Martin, also confirmed that at least five or six more Game of Thrones spin-offs are 'in development' at HBO.
During a recent interview with Spanish outlet, Los Siete Reinis, the author of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin, discussed his involvement in developing future projects for the beloved show. This revelation comes over six years after the ending of the original show, which had a successful eight-season run. Though the eighth season received a negative reception due to its controversial ending, the show has remained a fan favourite among viewers, earning high ratings from reviewers and critics alike. This is enough of a reason to create more spin-offs of the show, as Martin stated:
“Aside from 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' and 'House of the Dragon', there are other Game of Thrones spin-off projects in development. Most are prequels. There are several in development, maybe five or six shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working with other people. Yes, there are some sequels.”

George R.R. Martin has, however, not revealed whether the spin-offs in development are TV shows or films, though there have been several reports of both in the works for many years now, since the original show's finale. One such report was about Kit Harington working with HBO to develop a potential sequel series surrounding 'Jon Snow'. While many fans eagerly anticipated it, they were left disappointed when, in 2024, it was revealed that the spin-off had been officially cancelled. Apart from this, there were also rumours about a Game of Thrones movie being in development at Warner Bros. back in October 2024.

As of now, the only Game of Thrones spin-offs available to viewers are from HBO, both in the form of prequels. The first prequel is called House of the Dragon, which is set two centuries before the events of the original Game of Thrones show. The second is called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is set roughly in between the two shows and takes place around a hundred years earlier. Author, George R.R. Martin has also discussed other potential spin-off ideas, including an ‘Aegon the Conqueror’ show, allegedly set three hundred years before the parent show. Two of his other ideas did not make the cut, with one of them being a series centring on a warrior queen named 'Nymeria' who lived a thousand years in the past. His other idea was entitled 10,000 Ships, which would have focused primarily on a seafaring city.

Are you excited for the upcoming spin-offs of Game of Thrones? Let us know.
