Don’t look for a local photographer only!

Most leading photographers travel all over the world for assignments. It doesn’t matter where you are getting married, your photographer will come to you!

While there may be certain advantages of hiring a local photographer from the location you are getting married at (they know the place, you save on travel costs, etc.), chances are that smaller places may not have high-calibre talent locally available.

Find photographers you LOVE– regardless of where they are based. Chances are that they will be more than happy to travel to your wedding at no extra cost! Moreover, foreign locations won’t have photographers who know Indian weddings inside out, like an Indian photographer would. Non-Indian photographers may not know the many knick-knacks of most rituals that are involved in an Indian wedding.

Invest the time

You have chosen the destination to get married at for a variety of reasons. One of them will certainly be the fact that it is a gorgeous location. As we said before, after the years pass, it is your wedding photos that will bring your wedding memories back to life for you and your loved ones.

Choose a destination wedding photographer who will be able to take spectacular pre- and/or post-wedding photos for you that will concentrate on the location as much as the wedding. Carefully look into different photographers’ portfolios to see how well they manage to capture the surroundings, along with the couples and the rituals.

Three is a crowd, four a mob

Many a times, wedding photographers land up with an army of assistant photographers and their assistants in turn. In addition, the video team will also have their own set of people. All in all, there could be upwards of 10-12 people whose job will be to shoot your wedding.

At times like this, you have to ask yourself, do you really need so many people to shoot your destination wedding? Well, if you ask me– maybe, and maybe not. I prefer to err on the side of a smaller team, and a team who is trained to be inconspicuous. The last thing a professional wedding photographer wants is to spoil the experience for the couple or their guests.

So, discuss this with your photographer and make sure you have the right number of people at your wedding.

Consider honeymoon shots

Here is a tip that all those couples who are planning their honeymoon at their wedding destination itself, must know.

Did you know that certain photographers may agree to spend a day or so with you during your honeymoon? And, there are plenty of advantages to this:

  • Many couples (especially, those who go to non-English speaking locations) come back with “long arm” pictures. This means, you hold the camera out while trying to fit yourself and your partner into the frame and click. Well, these are like cramped up selfies that would not leave space for the beautiful locales to be captured well.
  • Moreover, you wind up with pictures that you take of each other. You take mine, I take yours, but what about ours?
  • Lastly, the photos you would click might just not do the justice to the beautiful place.

So, ask your photographer to do a couples shoot of you two during your honeymoon. You will come back with WOW pictures of the gorgeous places you went to, much to the envy of all your friends!
