Bollywood weddings are the most awaited events, and whenever the news of any celeb affair surfaces, the first question is when they are taking the plunge. But is every celeb wedding the beginning of a forever bond? Certainly not. Over the past many years, we have seen iconic Bollywood jodis ending up in bitter divorces.
In the world of glamour, where love and loyalty are always at stake, happy marriage often becomes a myth. The matches we thought were made in heaven end up midway on earth with ugly divorce battles. However, these divorces often leave the husband bankrupt as the divorce battle gets settled with huge alimony. So, here we bring to you a few Bollywood marriages that shockingly ended in expensive divorces.
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta were neighbours, and he was madly in love with her. After rejecting him initially, Reena reciprocated Aamir’s love. In 1986, the duo eloped and got married as their respective parents were against their union, owing to their different regions. The couple stayed together for 16 years and then parted ways due to unreconcilable differences.
In 2002, Aamir and Reena had a peaceful divorce, and as per multiple reports, Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan paid a sum of Rs. 50 crores as alimony to Reena. However, despite their divorce, Aamir and Reena are very cordial with each other.
Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh met on the sets of Rahul Rawail’s film, Bekhudi. Saif was so smitten by Amrita that he decided to ask her out for dinner after a couple of days. On their first dinner date, Saif had a good time with Amrita and he got to know her better. It was the beginning of their beautiful love story, and in 1991, Saif and Amrita tied the knot.

After 12 years and two kids, Saif and Amrita had mutually decided to end their marriage and were granted a divorce in 2004. Saif paid Rs. 5 crores as alimony to Amrita as a settlement. Not just this, the actor also committed to pay Rs. 1 lakh per month until their son, Ibrahim, turned 18.
Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Bhabani met at a nightclub in 1997 and started dating soon. After dating for three years, the couple got married in 2000 and became parents to two daughters, Shakya and Akira. However, after 16 years of marital bliss, the couple called it quits amicably. As per multiple reports, Farhan paid Adhuna one-time alimony instead of monthly maintenance. In addition, Adhuna kept their home, Vipassana, a sprawling 10,000 square feet bungalow in Bandstand, Mumbai, for herself. Farhan also invested a considerable amount of money for the financial security of their daughters.
Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan had the most romantic love story, and the duo dated for four years before getting married in 2000. The rumours of trouble in Hrithik and Sussanne’s relationship did the rounds during the movie, Kites. However, the couple kept denying it. In 2014, Hrithik and Sussanne ended their 14-year-long marriage.
After their divorce, it was reported that Sussanne demanded a stupendous sum of 400 crores. Though Hrithik denied the rumours, it was reported that the actor eventually paid Rs. 380 crores. Despite their separation, Hrithik and Sussanne are good friends and are co-parting their sons, Hrehaan and Hridaan.
In 2003, the gorgeous Karisma Kapur broke millions of hearts when she married Delhi-based businessman, Sunjay Kapur. The alliance was set up by Karisma’s mother, Babita Shivdasani and gained a huge limelight. In 2014, Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce through mutual consent, but things turned ugly when Karisma claimed that Sunjay was not ready to support her financially.
After that, Sunjay and Karisma did a lot of mudslinging on each other. After a lot of drama, the couple decided to resolve the matter amicably. After they were granted divorce in 2016, Karisma reportedly got Sunjay’s father’s house in Mumbai as an alimony. Sunjay also purchased bonds worth Rs. 14 crores for their children, which attracted monthly interest of Rs. 10 lakhs.
Actor, Director and choreographer, Prabhu Deva married Ramlath in 1995, who later changed her name to Latha. The couple’s marital life hit rock bottom after his affair with actress, Nayanthara started doing rounds in 2009. In 2010, Ramlath filed a petition in court after Prabhu started living-in with Nayanthara. In 2011, Prabhu and Ramlath were granted divorce. As part of the alimony, Prabhu gave Ramlath two cars, Rs. 10 lakh, and properties worth Rs. 20-25 crores.
Sanjay Dutt was smitten by Rhea Pillai when he met her. The duo dated for some time and got married in 1998. This was Sanjay’s second marriage, and he was very much in love with Rhea. However, their marriage was short-lived, and the couple got divorced amicably in 2005. As alimony, Sanjay gave her a sea-facing luxury apartment along with an expensive car. He even took care of her bills for a very long time.
Aditya Chopra is a very private person who prefers to keep his personal life away from media glares. The ace filmmaker married his childhood sweetheart, Payal Khanna, in 2001. However, when rumours of Aditya and Rani Mukerji started doing the rounds, problems started cropping up in Aditya and Payal’s marital life. Post his divorce from Payal, Aditya reportedly paid her a huge alimony of Rs. 50 crores.
Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora were counted as the most sought-after couples in Bollywood. The duo fell in love after meeting for the first time at an ad shoot. They got married in 1998 and embraced parenthood with the arrival of their son, Arhaan. However, their perfect marriage couldn’t stand the test of time, and after 19 years, the duo had a mutual divorce in 2017. Arbaaz provided an alimony of Rs. 10-15 crores to Malaika along with the joint custody of their son.
Many other Bollywood divorces like Sohail Khan and Seema Aajdeh, Esha Deol and Bharat Takhtani, AR Rahman and Saira Banu also involved huge alimony but there are no information about the same. These high-profile divorces throw light on the uncertainty of relationships in the glamour world and prove all that glitters is not gold.
