Ethan Hawke appears as 'The Grabber' in The Black Phone 2 and is best known for his work in films such as Dead Poets Society and Before Sunrise. Ethan with his character in Black Phone 2 has paid a homeage to the horror archtype but did you know that he has paddled the complex challenges of love as well as relationship. He was first married to Uma Thurman and then to Ryan Shawhughes. His romantic life has often been celebrated and also slammed.
Ethan's first highly prolific relationship was with Uma when both of them met in 1996 on the sets of Gattaca, a science fiction movie. The pair got married in 1998, and then they were blessed with Maya and a son called Levon. Now, the ex-couple faced many challenges, and in 2003, they opted for a separation. Well, it was in 2005 when in an interview with GQ Hype, Ethan had called his separation from Uma as something very humiliating and shared how he did not even feel positive about the same.

After 20 years, Ethan and Uma had separated, and in an earlier interview with GQ Hype, Ethan had revealed how humiliated he felt after the breakup with his ex-wife. It was in 2004 when Ethan filed for separation, which was granted in 2005, thus ending their lasting relationship since 1998. Both of them had met at work, during the filming of Gattaca. Speaking of feeling humiliated after the separation, the actor had shared:
“It’s humiliating. It’s almost humiliating even when they’re saying positive things."

Ethan did feel intimate while working with Uma on the sets of Gattaca which he called as 'imaginative intimacy'. The feeling was dangerous, thrilling and being in love meant turning the temperature up in your life. Ethan, with Uma, felt like falling in love at summer camp. Despite their public divorce, the ex-couple respectfully co-parented, and Ethan always refrained from discussing details of his separation. For him, protecting his kids from the scrutiny of the public was more important.

Ethan had to battle his personal demons after he separated from Uma back in 2005. The First Reformed star told the same publication that when his marriage to Uma fell apart, he received an Oscar nomination for Training Day, his 2001 movie. It was the start of a new thing in his career, commercially, but his divorce affected Ethan mentally. He shared being depressed and struggling when his career rose, as his marriage was starting to dissolve. He said:

“I don’t know if you feel this way, but when you’re depressed, it’s really easy to see everything that is fake about other people and life, and I just started seeing that,” he said. “How phony celebrity was, how phony everything is. You channel your inner Holden Caulfield, you know?”
Ethan added that it was not at all easy for him to come out of his depression. He shared that his kids were like his support system, along with work and theatre, that helped him come out of the same. He found balance in life as his kids needed him, and his life was not just about himself.

Reportedly, in 2004, Ethan started having a relationship with Ryan. The pair married in June 2008 and have been blessed with two daughters. Ethan was accused of infidelity, but shared that his relationship with Ryan started after his divorce from Uma. Ryan had earlier worked as a nanny for his children, whom he had with Uma. Ryan and Ethsan are parents to Indiana and Clementine. Well Ryan and Ethan reconnected after he divorced from his ex-wife. During that phase, she was taking care of Ethan's kids with his first wife. Their love for one another extended beyond the dynamics of their personal relationship. Both of them were seen collaborating on varied movie and TV projects and blended creative talents to make engaging content.
In a 2009 interview with The Guardian, Ethan shared about his and Ryan's relationship. For the unversed, she has been a board member of EngenderHealth, which is an organisation related to advancing reproductive health and rights related to gender equality. She is also a member of The Alex Fund and Soccer Without Borders. The former caters to a non-profit organisation for underprivileged kids' education in Romania. Ethan, once addressing his relationship with Ryan, shared:
"I was very cautious during that period of my life and desperately wanted to stay single," he said. "But sometimes life happens to you. Now, I love Ryan tremendously. The bottom line is we're incredibly compatible. We grew up in the same town, you know, all that old school s--- your grandma told you. She has always been an extremely sensible, no-bullshit woman, and frankly I thought that might be good for a half-madman like me."
Ethan Hawke has always been in the eyes of the public related to his intense relationships. At one end, his marriage to Uma, which led to separation, became widely discussed.
