Blame it on Cinderella, but step-siblings have a bad image and are always seen as evil. In reality, though the new family of your father or mother can create a complex family dynamic, in the end, you know that they will always have your back. When there’s love, half, step or whole doesn’t matter in a relationship. Family isn’t defined or restricted by blood but includes the ones, you can’t live without. Such is the relationship of love shared between Dharmendra’s two families, keeping in mind the complexities and sensitivity of their complex family dynamics.

Dharmendra’s children, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol from his first wife, Prakash Kaur and Esha Deol and Ahana Deol from the second wife, Hema Malini share a warm and supportive bond. For instance, when in 2019, Sunny Deol had made a political debut with the Lok Sabha elections with a BJP ticket from the Gurdaspur seat and had won with a huge margin, Esha Deol had extended her warm wishes to him. Congratulating Sunny on his victory, Esha had tweeted, “Congratulations @iamsunnydeol my best wishes to u always.” To which, Sunny had replied, “Thanks @Esha_Deol.”
In the biography Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, it was revealed that no one from Hema Malini’s side of the family was allowed to visit her husband, Dharmendra’s family home. However, it was her daughter, Esha Deol, who was the first one to get permission and that too with the help of her half-brother, Sunny Deol. When Dharmendra’s brother and Abhay Deol’s father, Ajeet Deol had fallen sick in 2015, Esha wanted to meet him and it was Sunny, who had made arrangements for her.

Elaborating on her relationship with uncle, Ajeet Deol and why she had to take Sunny Deol’s help to meet him, Esha Deol had said, “I wanted to meet my uncle and pay my respects. He loved me and Ahana very much and we were also very close to Abhay. We had no other way than to go to his house. He was not even in the hospital that we would meet him there. So, I called Sunny Bhaiya and they made full arrangements to meet him.” Talking about meeting her father, Dharmendra’s first wife and her step-mother, Prakash Kaur for the first time, Esha had continued, “I touched her feet and she left after blessing me.”

Throwing some light on Esha Deol’s relationship with her cousin, Abhay Deol, when she had completed eight years of marital bliss with her hubby, Bharat Takhtani, she had posted an unseen picture from their wedding, where the Socha Na Tha star was seen performing the rituals of a brother. On her IG story, Esha had posted a picture with Abhay performing the wedding rituals and her parents, Hema Malini and Dharmendra standing by her side. In 2018, when Esha and Bharat were in California, they had met Abhay for lunch and sharing the pictures on her social media handle, the Dhoom star had written, “Soul connect @abhaydeol #californiacation.” Abhay had posted an adorable picture with his niece, Radhya Takhtani with the caption, “Radhya- “TALK TO THE HAND BUDDY!” Not even 9 months old and already sassy. Ah well, she is my niece!”

In a throwback interview with Daily Bhaskar, Dharmendra’s first wife, Prakash Kaur had defended her husband for being tagged as a womaniser. She had said, “Why only my husband, any man would have preferred Hema to me. How dare anyone call my husband a womaniser when half the industry is doing the same thing? All heroes are having affairs and getting married a second time.” Sympathising with Hema Malini, she had added, “I can understand what Hema is going through. Even she has to face the world, her relatives and her friends. But if I were in Hema’s place, I would not have done what she did. For, as a woman, I can understand her feelings. But as a wife and a mother, I do not approve of them.”
