Emraan Hashmi Defends Haq Amid Controversy, 'Mere Bete Puja Bhi Karte Hai, Namaaz Bhi Padhte Hai'

Emraan Hashmi’s much-awaited release Haq, starring him opposite Yami Gautam, is all set for theatrical release on November 7, 2025. The film is based on the Shah Bano Begum case and her fight for justice after her husband, Ahmed Khan, divorced her. Directed by Suparn S Varma, Haq is marred in controversy for its subject.

Emraan Hashmi defends Haq amid controversy

The lead actor of the film, Emraan Hashmi, defends it and reveals that there is no religious propaganda in it. He also highlighted that the film is based on Shah Bano’s identity as an Indian Muslim. Talking about the same to ANI, he said:

“Shah Bano said 'Mai Musalman hu hindustani aurat hu pehle and 'I should get my maintenance under secular law and constitutional law. Beyond Muslim personal law'. It became a landmark case; Shah Bano was fighting for a lot of women, for different generations to come.”

Emraan Hashmi calls himself a 'liberal Muslim'

In the same interaction, Emraan also stated that the film talks about a woman’s rights and raises the issue of her dignity. Calling himself a liberal Muslim, he stated that the film didn’t malign any community. In his words:

“As a liberal Muslim, I can say that I had no problems with the viewpoint of the film. Because we are not maligning any community, if we were, I wouldn't have done this film. I married Parveen, who is a Hindu. Meri family mein mere bete puja bhi karte hai, namaaz bhi padhte hai. This is my secular upbringing. So, from my point of view, I am watching this film.”

What is the Shah Bano case, on which the film, Haq is based?

Haq is inspired by the real-life story of Shah Bano, a Muslim woman who went to the Supreme Court in the late '70s to seek justice after her husband, Mohammed Ahmad Khan, abandoned her and their children. She married Mohammed Ahmad Khan in 1932, and the couple had five children, three sons and two daughters. She faced her husband, Mohammed Ahmad Khan, who was also a well-known advocate, across the court from her. It became one of the most controversial cases in India.

What is the controversy related to Haq?

The film is not just under scrutiny from religious leaders; Shah Banu’s daughter, Siddiqua Begum, has also sent a legal notice to the makers. According to the notice, the movie used Shah Bano’s personal story without her consent, and Siddiqua demanded that the release be stopped immediately. Siddiqua’s lawyer also stated that the family is unaware of the film's content and that the makers should have obtained consent from Shah Banu’s family first.
