Emma Watson Speaks About Her Rift With Harry Potter Author, J.K. Rowling, 'I'm Most Upset About..'

Emma Watson is known for her portrayal in the Harry Potter movie series, wherein she played the role of one of the lead characters, 'Hermione Granger'. Well, the actress had a dispute with the author, J.K. Rowling, over her comments about the transgender community. It so happened that Emma and other actors of the Harry Potter movie distanced themselves from the opinions of the author, Rowling, who has been a vocal opponent of the transgender community since 2019. Recently, Emma was asked about her relationship with the author, and she opened up about the same.

Emma Watson recently sat for an interview on the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast, wherein she was asked about her bond and rift with J.K. Rowling. To this, Emma said that she doesn't believe that if she has a different opinion on anything from the person she loves, they can't hold love for each other.

The actress further revealed that she doesn't think that people who share different opinions from hers will stop loving her, or she will not cherish memories with a person she had personal experience with, if that person doesn't share opinions like hers. Emma Watson can be quoted as saying:

"I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with. I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don’t get to keep and cherish. To come back to our earlier thing — I just don’t think these things are either or. I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with."

Emma Watson, in the same interview, revealed that she is most upset about the fact that a conversation between her and Rowling about this never happened. When she was asked if she would be open to having that conversation, she mentioned that she would definitely do the same, as she believes in it.

What happened between Emma Watson and J.K. Rowling?

Emma Watson performed in one of the lead roles in the Harry Potter, movie series, which is an adaptation of the novels of J.K. Rowling. Over the years, the author sparked controversies with anti-transgender comments and supported the opinions on transphobic views. It was back in 2020, when Emma and her co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, distanced themselves from Rowling's opinions on transgender rights, which she had described in an essay.

Emma and Daniel extended their support to the transgender community. All three leads spoke out against the criticism of the transgender community, which was also supported by Rowling. Emma took to her social media handle and shared her view, mentioning that trans people are who they say they are, and they deserve all the rights, instead of being constantly questioned about their identity. Emma's note could be read as:

"Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are."

Later, J.K. Rowling said that she would never be able to forgive all the actors. She was also asked on X, which actors or actresses she felt had ruined a movie for her, she replied by saying 'The Trio', seemingly indicating the three leads of the movie series, Harry Potter.
