Well, one can only imagine how difficult it would be for someone to cope with the loss of someone with whom they have decided to spend their life. Talking about his first wife, DY Chandrachud once revealed that Rashmi's responsibility was on him, and he had to juggle between the court and the hospital. He shared that his wife was admitted to the hospital, and he used to take utmost care of her as he would go to court regularly from the hospital, and would again arrive at the same place after work.
Rashmi and DY Chandrachud have two sons, Abhinav and Chintan Chandrachud. Both of Rashmi and DY Chandrachud's sons are in the law profession. While Abhinav practices law in the Bombay High Court, Chintan resides abroad and also is in the legal profession.
It was in 2008 when DY Chandrachud got married to Kalpana Das at the age of 49, who is also in the legal profession. Talking about Kaplana, DY Chandrachud told The Week that till now, he and Kalpana are great friends, and his wife has been the source of strength in his life.
Chief Justice bared his heart out in the interview and revealed that there's absolutely nothing in their life that they haven't shared with each other, and his wife has deep social values, which also eventually helped him to evolve as a person. "But just as we have travelled together, we engage in very serious conversations. My association with her has helped me to evolve as a person. She has helped me find a mirror to my own soul. Sometimes what Kalpana says may not be very nice at that moment, but over time I have come to realise the value of it."
In the same interview, DY Chandrachud shared that when he proposed to Kalpana, she was the least likely to be married back then. Chief Justice has shared that he and Kalpana met with a little bit of coincidence, and when he popped the question, "Will you marry me?", she was shocked as she was against the idea of somebody proposing to her. Talking more about the same, DY Chandrachud stated:
"When I proposed to her, Kalpana was a confirmed single woman. Amongst her group of friends, she was the least likely to get married, because she was so happy being single. She was working, and she was based in Delhi, while I was in Mumbai. We met through a fair bit of coincidence. When I asked her whether she would get married, she said, “Marry? Me?” She was absolutely aghast at the idea of somebody popping the question. She had never given a serious thought to getting married to me."
Talking about the key to their strong bond, DY Chandrachud revealed that they both don't like to socialise much, and the one thing that makes them come together is their spare time. He mentioned that they would be at home doing their own things, but they love this cosy atmosphere. He shared that his wife understands the need for space in his life as well. "Give us an opportunity and we would never opt to go to a party. Even today, we share the same space, but we are doing our own thing. I might be reading a book or listening to music, Kalpana might be watching a documentary or looking after our two lovely girls. We have made it a point in the last almost 15 years to ensure that we give each other adequate space. Kalpana knows that I need that time alone to reflect or sometimes digest what has happened through my day."
