Man Behind 'India's First Moon' Mission, Dr K Kasturirangan, Ex-ISRO Chief, Dies At The Age Of 84

Dr K. Kasturirangan, a former ISRO Chief who had led the organisation for nearly a decade, passed away at the age of 84 in Bengaluru, India.

Man Behind 'India's First Moon' Mission, Dr K Kasturirangan, Ex-ISRO Chief, Dies At The Age Of 84

Former ISRO chief Dr K. Kasturirangan passed away in Bengaluru, India, at the age of 84. He is the man behind India's first moon mission, and it was his leadership which shaped India's bright future in space. For those who don't know, Dr K Kasturirangan was born on October 24, 1940, in Ernakulam. He is an awardee of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan for his outstanding work. 

Dr K Kasturirangan passed away in Bengaluru

Former Indian Space Research Organisation chairman, K Kasturirangan took his last breath in his Bengaluru residence on April 25, 2025. According to a statement by ISRO, Kasturirangan passed away at 10:43 a.m. His parthiv sharir's antim darshan will be held on April 27, 2025, between 10 a.m. and noon for the public to pay their respect. 

PM Narendra Modi's words after hearing the news of Dr K Kasturirangan's demise

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also took time out to bid goodbye to the former ISRO chief, who was a visionary leader. Modi referred Dr K Kasturirangar as the 'towering figure' in India's scientific and educational journey. He wrote:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. K. Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered. His leadership also witnessed ambitious satellite launches and focussed on innovation."

More about Dr K Kasturirangan

For the unversed, Dr K Kasturirangan is the man behind the educational reforms. He has served as Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission. He has also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the then Planning Commission of India. He also served as a director of the ISRO Satellite Center, where he developed INSAT-2, IRS-1A/1B, and other scientific satellites. Not only this, Dr K Kasturirangan was the project director for India's first earth observation satellites, Bhaskara I and II. 

Dr K Kasturirangan will always be remembered as the lighthouse of knowledge in India and the research journey!
