Trump Critic, Stephen Colbert's The Late Show Gets Cancelled, To Go Off Air Soon: What's The Reason?

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is a popular American late-night talk show that airs on CBS. This show features political commentary, celebrity interviews, discussion about current events and more. The show first began in 1993 with David Letterman. It was in 2015 when Stephen Colbert took the host seat. With him as a host, The Late Show became one of the most-watched shows on US broadcast television. After 33 years on air, CBS has announced that the show will go off the air in May 2026, leading everyone to wonder what the possible reason might be.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is going off air next year

According to CBS, they are cancelling The Late Show due to some financial issues. While this was presented as the main reason, people on social media have been questioning whether it is true, given reports that Paramount, which owns CBS, has been seeking the Trump administration's approval to sell the network to Skydance Media.

Sharing the reason, CBS said in a statement that this decision was made due to financial reasons and the tough schedule, which included late nights. It was also stated in the statement that no kind of performance, content, or other matters related to Paramount were the reason for the cancellation of the show, which has been on air for 33 years. The statement could be read as:

"Next year will be our last season. … It’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”

Stephen Colbert reacts to The Late Show being cancelled

Colbert has been winning hearts since the time he became the host of The Late Show. His wit, intelligence, and fearless commentary have always been the talk of the town. His criticism of Donald Trump has been praised by a liberal and progressive audience. However, after being with the show for a decade, it's somewhat heartbreaking to see it end. Talking about the same, at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York, Stephen Colbert confirmed that the next year will be the last season of The Late Show. He also clarified that he is not being replaced, and rather, the show is going away altogether. Stephen Colbert can be quoted as saying:

“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

Why is The Late Show going off air?

The fact that The Late Show is going off air, the audience had left disappointed and dug into the reason. A source told CNN that the show's ad revenue has made it unprofitable. If the reports are to be believed, the show actually faced financial struggles for several years, resulting in a significant drop in ratings, as well as a shift towards fast-paced generations who are more immersed in the digital world, and shrinking ad revenue, among others.

While this might be the cause, the fact that Paramount recently settled a USD 60 million lawsuit with Donald Trump two weeks ago, people have been wondering if this could be a reason. The lawsuit was against an interview of Kamala Harris on CBS. To note, it's Stephen Colbert who has been one of the most talked-about critics of Donald Trump.
