Dimple Kapadia is one of the finest actresses of Bollywood, who went way beyond everyone’s expectations to prove herself. She was just 14 when she gave a screen test for Raj Kapoor’s film, Bobby. The film’s success made Dimple an overnight star, for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Dimple became a star overnight, and women copied the miniskirts and knotted polka-dot shirts she wore in Bobby. At the age of 15, Dimple married superstar Rajesh Khanna in 1973, who was then 30 years old. She was one of the biggest fans of Rajesh Khanna, and the couple soon became parents to two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna. After her marriage to Rajesh, Dimple left acting and focused on her family.
In 1982, Dimple Kapadia separated from Rajesh Khanna and returned to acting in 1984. Dimple was just 25 when she made a bold comeback in Ramesh Sippy’s film, Saagar, opposite Rishi Kapoor. The film had a shot of Dimple in a swimsuit, which was considered a bold choice for an actress with two kids. Talking about her comeback, Dimple once said:
“Even a mother of two can make a comeback. I don’t want to talk about the swimsuit. The film was good.”
During Dimple’s debut film, Bobby, she was linked with Rishi Kapoor. Their on-screen chemistry in Bobby gave rise to many rumours of their off-screen love. Dimple had a few kissing scenes with Rishi Kapoor in Saagar, which raised eyebrows at the time.
Rishi Kapoor worried that his on-screen intimacy with Dimple Kapadia would upset his wife, Neetu Kapoor. So, he didn’t inform her about the kiss since he thought it would make her insecure. However, after the premiere of the film, Neetu informed Rishi that she was unimpressed and felt ashamed of him for being a bad kisser.

After the release of Bobby, Rishi and Dimple were a hit jodi, and there were many rumours pertaining to their affair. In his memoir, Khullam Khulla, Rishi penned how his wife, Neetu Kapoor, felt threatened when he and Dimple were cast together in Saagar. In his words:
“Many years into our marriage, Neetu confided in me that the only time she had felt threatened was when I worked with Dimple in Saagar. But she needn’t have worried. Dimple was a friend, even if she may have been a little more than that during Bobby. Ten years had gone by; she was coming out of a marriage with two children of her own and I was also well settled with two kids."
After a few years of his marriage to Dimple, Rajesh Khanna’s stardom started fading away as his movies were not doing that well in the 70s and 80s. As a result, the superstar couldn’t handle the failure, and it affected his relationship with Dimple. Despite many attempts, Dimple couldn’t mend her failing marriage, and as a result, she left him in 1984 and later admitted that marrying a superstar was a wrong decision.
Despite being separated for years, Rajesh and Dimple never got divorced because of their daughters.
