Dilip Kumar Once Called Leaving His Marriage With Saira Banu A 'Grave Mistake', Said, 'Would Like..'

Dilip Kumar was one of the most adored actors in Bollywood and one of the most eligible bachelors. The actor was the dream man of every female during the 50s and 60s. However, he left numerous hearts broken when he finally married Saira Banu at the age of 44.

Dilip Kumar called leaving his marriage with Saira Banu after 16 years a 'grave mistake'

Dilip Kumar's bride, Saira Banu, was only 22 years old when she married the actor. However, 16 years into their marriage, the couple faced a crisis. Dilip had secretly married a woman in Hyderabad. Things got even more complicated as Saira learned about the actor's second wife, Asma Rehman, through the newspaper. And the incident left the actor guilt-ridden. 

Initially, Saira didn't believe her husband could do such a thing, but the truth soon emerged, leaving her heartbroken. The actor eventually confessed that he had made a 'Grave Mistake' by betraying Saira and soon after asked her to give him some time to divorce Asma legally. Dilip, before the divorce was finalised, signed a 'letter of commitment' to Saira, and this time, he kept his vows till his dying breath. Talking about the incident, Dilip had once stated:

"Saira stood by me when I admitted the grave mistake and asked her to give me some time to undo the wrong through proper legal processes and restore the sanctity of our marriage of sixteen years. I requested Saira to give me some time to sort it all out."

Dilip Kumar reflected on the painful period of his life in his memoir

Dilip Kumar revealed about the second marriage at length in his memoir, The Substance And The Shadow: An Autobiography. The actor in the text revealed how he met Asma Rehman in Hyderabad during a cricket match. He revealed that what began as an innocent interaction between one of the most loved actors and his fans soon took a different turn. He added that he met Asma through his sister and was introduced to the actor as a married woman with three children. However, soon, he noticed that Asma and her husband were wherever he went. Talking about the same, he stated:

"I was completely unaware of a connivance that was being mischievously perpetuated and a situation being cleverly created by vested interests to draw a commitment from me."

Dilip Kumar believed that the incident eventually brought him and Saira Banu closer

Dilip Kumar married Asma Rehman in 1982, and the news broke Saira Banu. However, reflecting on this chapter of his life with Saira, Dilip believed that he had been a 'victim of a situation that was set to precipitate a deep crisis in my marriage with Saira.' He called the events happened because there was a divine purpose behind the turmoil and had eventually brought Saira and him closer. However, he acknowledged the immense pain he had caused his wife and stated:

"I can never forget or forgive myself for the hurt I caused to Saira and the shattering of the unshakeable faith she had in me."
