Emily in Paris, starring Lilly Collins in the titular role, is one of the most beloved series on Netflix. However, a shadow of gloom has spread over the cast, crew and fans of the show after a tragic incident. Diego Bordella, Assistant Director of Emily in Paris, has passed away after reportedly collapsing on the set of the show. Condolences have poured in for the departed soul as everyone is still reeling from the shock of Diego's untimely death. Amid this tragic news, here is everything to know about Diego Borella. 

Diego Borella worked in the visual arts and literature 

Diego Borella was born in Venice, Italy and was a well-known professional who knew his way around many film and TV show sets with an extensive career in the field, reported La Repubblica. The Venetian worked in visual arts and literature, and had also trained in New York, Rome and London. The Italian news portal reported that Diego had recently taken an interest in writing poetry and stories for children. 

As per a Hindustan Times report, people who knew Diego described him as a person who could adapt very well to international projects. Meanwhile, he also pursued his own passion on the side. As for working on the set of Netflix's Emily in Paris, Diego was filming for the fifth season of the show in Italy when tragedy struck him. 

Diego Borella collapsed on the set of the show, Emily in Paris 

While preparing to shoot the final episode of season five in Italy's Hotel Danieli, Diego collapsed on August 21, 2025, as several reports suggest. Medical help was immediately called as many crew members saw the Assistant Director fall. The Venice health services stated to The Independent that they had tried to revive him, however, the attempts were in vain. Paramedics arrived around 6:45 p.m. and by 7:30 p.m, Diego was pronounced dead. The health services shared with the news portal:

“Our ambulance arrived at 18.42 (on Thursday evening). Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end, all efforts proved fruitless. At around 19.30, he was pronounced deceased."

As per La Repubblica, a local doctor has stated that Diego Borella passed away due to a sudden heart attack. However, an official confirmation of the reason for death is still awaited. Along with that, Emily in Paris season 5 shooting was supposed to be wrapped by August 25, 2025, under the supervision of the late Assistant Director. But, due to the tragic course of events, filming was postponed for a while. Paramount Television Studios confirmed the passing away of Diego to People and shared:

Emily in Paris season 5 has resumed filming two days after the death of Diego Borella 

Diego Borella passed away on August 21, 2025. Two days later, on August 23, the filming of Emily in Parisresumed. Taking the saying, "The show must go on" in a literal sense, the makers of the Netflix series have unpaused the shooting, with reports suggesting it is set for a December 2025 release. Lilly Collins, who plays the protagonist, was seen in a boat with Eugenio Franceschini, Ashley Park and Paul Forman as they shot for a scene in Venice, Italy. As of yet, none of the cast members have made any comments on the passing away of Diego Borella.
