Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar is breaking all records, thanks to stellar performances by many leading stars. Be it Arjun Rampal’s role of ‘Major Iqbal’, Akshaye Khanna as ‘Rehman Dakait’, or Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazari, each actor outshone the other and played a tremendous role in the action-packed spy thriller.
The film, which showcases extreme violence, is set against the backdrop of significant events such as the hijacking of IC-814 in 1999 and the Parliament attack in 2001. Though the references remain ambiguous, the characters portrayed in the film seem real. While people heaped praises on Akshaye Khanna, Madhavan, and Ranveer Singh, there is one actor whom many viewers completely failed to recognise.

The actor in question is none other than Gaurav Gera, the most-loved television star, who shot to fame with the iconic TV show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. Gaurav underwent a remarkable transformation in the film, portraying the role of an Indian intelligence operative and guiding Ranveer Singh’s character.

As pictures of the actor surfaced online, people were in disbelief that it was Gaurav Gera, who has played many interesting characters in films and television. Many social media users praised Gaurav for his effortless acting and hard work. In fact, the moment he shared his pictures from the film, filmmaker, Farah Khan commented and said:
“I swear I didn’t recognise u for the whole film... only when Mukesh asked me how was Gaurav?? N that’s the highest compliment for an artist.”

Gaurav Gera played the role of an Indian spy, a middle-aged man, Mohammad Aalam, in the film. He is disguised as a juice vendor who runs a juice shop in the Lyari market. He helps Ranveer Singh’s character, Hamza Ali Mazari, to become a core member in Akshaye Khanna’s gang. His dialogue, ‘Darling Darling, Dil kyu toda. Peelo peelo, aalam soda’.

Interestingly, Gaurav’s look in the film was crafted in such a manner that it took the audience some time to recognise him. In a chat with Zoom, Gaurav talked about his role in Dhurandhar and said:
“Of course my character looked way older than how I look. Infact people don't realise my actual age. The film's team even cut my hair shorter than usual. I sported white beard, which in reality is white due to all these years of makeup. But yeah, people finally saw the real me.”

After receiving heaps of praise for his role in Dhurandhar, Gaurav Gera is overwhelmed with fans’ love. In the same Zoom chat, Gaurav mentioned that he felt happy and had been waiting for that moment for a long time. Speaking about the same, he said:
“I feel so happy and lucky to be part of Dhurandhar. After playing such varied characters including Chutki, I was waiting for an opportunity where I can show various shades of my craft. Sometimes an actor gets typecast and audience doesn't realise what he/she is capable of. Dhurandhar is such a film that allowed me to explore a side of me which viewers hadn't seen until now.”
Since Gaurav had earlier played a character who used a Multani accent, it was easy for him to play a man from Lyari. As for Gaurav’s casting, he gave an audition and was asked to play an intense scene while acting normally, melting into the crowd. Gaurav nailed the audition and got the role.
