Dia Mirza is a prominent Indian actress who is known for her beauty, grace, versatile acting skills and commitment to environmental causes. Despite making her way into showbiz by winning a beauty pageant, she chose to play complex roles on-screen over glitzy ones, which left the audience impressed. Apart from thriving in her two-decade-long acting career, Dia is also a wonderful wife and a mother who balances her personal life well with her work. At the same time, her honest views on significant issues are admired by her fans. In a recent panel discussion, Dia raised one such significant issue of phone addiction among kids.
Dia Mirza is a mother to her four-year-old son, Avyaan Azad Rekhi and shares a close bond with her husband, Vaibhav Rekhi's daughter, Samaira, from his first marriage. The actress recently made an appearance on Janice Sequeira's The Healing Circle, where she opened up about a significant insight about Samaira. As the guests began discussing parenting in the modern age, Dia Mirza highlighted how screen addiction among kids has led to their emotional fallout. Sharing an example of her daughter, she said:
"She (Samaira) was spending eight hours a day on her phone. We're now trying to reverse that, but it's been an incredibly difficult journey,".
Dia highlighted how their whole family is making efforts to help the 16-year-old cope with her screen addiction. The actress also compared screen addiction in teens with substance dependency, highlighting how it gradually impacts their physical and emotional well-being. In her words:
"Screen content, especially that created for children, is like a dopamine addiction. It's like giving a child cocaine. It is terrifying to see children being made up or put in provocative situations for the sake of views or content. The rise in child exploitation and abuse, including child pornography, is deeply concerning, which is why some countries have banned children under 16 from using social media."
Dia Mirza once opened up about her special bond with Samaira in an interview with News18. During the conversation, she shared that her step daughter prefers to call her by her first name rather than 'ma' or 'mumma.' The actress explained that she has no complaints over it because Samira has a wonderful mother, and due to the young girl, her little son has also learnt to call her 'Dia mom'. She explained:
"She hasn't called me maa. There is no expectation from her to call me 'maa,' 'Mumma,' or 'mother'. She has a mother who she calls 'mumma' or 'mom'. She calls me 'Dia'." Dia further humorously noted that her son, Avyaan, has also picked up this habit and sometimes calls her 'Dia mom.'"
Dia Mirza came into the spotlight after she was crowned Miss Asia Pacific in 2000, which opened doors to the Indian film industry. She debuted in Bollywood with the 2001 film, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, which has achieved a cult status over the years. The actress has starred in popular movies like Dus, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and more. Dia was last seen in Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor starrer Nadaaniyan.
