Bollywood actress, Dia Mirza welcomed her first child, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi in 2021, with her husband, Vaibhav Rekhi. However, much ahead of that, she embraced parenthood with her stepdaughter, Samaira (born to Vaibhav from his first wife). Despite being a stepmother, Dia shares a beautiful bond with Samaira and proof of the same is often found on the former's social media handle. Now, in a candid conversation, Dia revealed unknown anecdotes from her motherhood journey and also mentioned how her stepdaughter addresses her.
Dia Mirza gave birth to her son, Avyaan Azaad Rekhi when she was 39 years old, but now in an interview with News18 Showsha, the actress revealed that she wanted to become a mother within 30 years of age. She opened up about setting personal milestones about getting married by 26 and having her first child before she turned 30. However, things happened in different time zones, and at that time, she became extremely resistant while going with the flow. Thus, she created much stress and tension and went through severe trauma at that time. But now she has understood that finding acceptance in the things panning out in their flow is the best.

In the same conversation, Dia then went on to explain how she was disappointed with the fact that she could not hit the personal milestone, and how it was taking a toll on her relationships. Moreover, she was being extremely hard on herself. But thankfully, Dia soon understood how taking a break from whatever was happening to her was important. Elaborating how she stopped worrying about her set timeline, she said:
“I went through hell. There was anger, there was resentment, there was despair, there was all of that. And I think it may have taken a toll even on my relationships. So it does, it’s natural for it to affect you, affect your relationships when you are hard on yourself and have such rigid conditioning. It takes your own understanding of yourself to say, ‘One second, what am I doing here? I am just making things worse, I just need to step back and asses why things are not happening the way they need to.’ If they are not happening for a certain reasons then you need to work on fixing the problem or stepping back from it, taking a break and giving yourself a break more than anything else.”
Further, Dia opened up about her expectations and more from her stepdaughter, Samaira. The actress revealed that Samaira hasn’t yet called her ‘maa’ or ‘mumma’. However, the doting stepmother mentioned that she completely understood the fact that Samaira already has her birth mother. Thus, she has no such expectation from the little girl to call her with the same titles. Afterwards, Dia revealed that Samaira calls her by her name, and listening to this, her son, Avyaan, too, at times calls her the same. Laughingly, Dia shared:
“She hasn’t called me maa. There is no expectations from her to call me ‘maa’, ‘mumma’ or ‘mother’. She has a mother who she calls ‘mumma’ or ‘mom’. She calls me ‘Dia'. Thanks to her now Avyaan also calls me ‘Dia’ once in a while. He says ‘Dia mom’, it’s too funny.”

Then, Dia recalled the time when her son, Avyaan uttered the word 'maa' for the first time. The doting mommy admitted that her son uttered this word much later than when he started saying words. Narrating the incident, she mentioned that it was when she was showing butterflies to Avyaan in their home's garden, and her husband, Viabhav was recording the video. At that time, the little boy called her ‘maa’ for the first time, and she was simply on top of everything. Dia added:
“Oh my god, I will never forget that day. He said mumma much later. I think it was a good three months after he started to say words. It was a beautiful moment because all the flowers had started to bloom in the balcony and there were lots of butterflies visiting the flowers, and he was in my arms. I was showing him the butterflies and I was through the plants because there were three to four butterflies for him to get a closer look at it. He suddenly looked at me and said, ‘Mumma’, I was like ‘Oh my god! What just happened.’ Interestingly, my husband had his camera and he was recording me showing Avyaan the butterflies so we have the whole moment on cameras. It was magical.”
