Dharmendra, the 'He Man' of Bollywood, passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. Filmmaker, Anil Sharma had collaborated with the late veteran actor on seven movies. Anil shared that Dharmendra's loss was heartbreaking both professionally and personally. Anil revealed that he was developing a sequel to the movie, Apne, which came out in 2007, and now shared that the project on Apne 2 has been halted.
Anil Sharma recently sat down for an interview with Hindustan Times and said he cannot make the sequel to Apne 2 without his idol, Dharmendra. The filmmaker has shared that an emotional void has been left behind. He shared that, for the same reason, making Apne 2 won't be possible, as Dharmendra had shaped a major chunk of his cinematic journey. Anil Sharma shared:
"Apneto apno ke bina nahi ho sakti. Without Dharamji, it’s impossible to make the sequel. Everything was on track and the script was ready, but he left us. Some dreams remain unfulfilled. Without him, it’s not possible!”

For the unversed, Anil had worked with Dharmendra in Hukumat, Elaan-e-Jung, Farishtey, and also Tahalka. He had also produced Policewala Gunda and directed Apne. Anil had also directed Singh Saab The Great, in which Dharmendra had a cameo and worked with his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol. Anil, in the interview, also remembered his last meeting with Dharmendra and noted:
"I met him in early October, and he said, ‘Anil, koi achhi kahani la, achhi film karni hai... camera meri mehbooba hai, mujhe yaad karti hai. Mujhe jana hai uske samne."

Anil had a relationship with Dharmendra that was beyond the camera. He called the Sholay superstar a great actor and an amazing human being who brought his characters to life beautifully. Anil remembered how he was always a huge fan of Dharmendra and shared that when he was living in Mathura, there were only two stars: Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra. Anil noted on Dharamendra's connection with fans and called it 'incredible'. For Anil and for all the fans, Dharmendra was a great actor who was not aware of the legend that he was and will remain, even after he has gone. For those who are not aware, Dharmendra's Apne had seen Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty together in pivotal roles. Earlier, Sunny and Bobby were seen together in Dillagi.

For the unversed, Dharmendra was one of those rare stars who had launched his two sons, Sunny as well as Bobby Deol, via his production house and later featured them in movies. This way, their real bond turned out to be a real treat for their sea of fans. It was in 2007 when the Deol family took their fans on an emotional ride with Apne. When the movie completed 18 years, Dharmendra, earlier in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, stated that the film had brought him and his sons all together. In his words:

"Apne is a film I am extremely proud of. It brought me and my two sons together. (Director) Anil Sharma wrote a script that did justice to all three of our characters. I remember we felt like a family on and off screen while shooting Apne.”
