UK businessman, Sunjay Kapur tragically passed away at the age of 53 on June 12, 2025. He was well known as the former husband of Karisma Kapoor. However, within just a month of his demise, his family, including his widow, Priya Sachdev, his mom, Rani Kapur and his and Karisma’s kids, Kiaan and Samaira, got involved in a legal drama. For the unversed, Samaira and Kiaan are currently fighting a legal battle with Sunjay’s widow, Priya. The kids are backed in court by their mom, Karisma, and their grandmother, Rani.
According to a report by Viral Bhayani, on November 14, 2025, during the court proceeding involving Sunjay Kapur’s Rs. 30,000 estate, the Delhi HC’s remark to avoid 'melodrama' was directed at Priya Sachdev and not Karisma Kapoor. Earlier reports claimed that Justice Jyoti Singh warned either party to avoid melodrama during the court proceedings, when Karisma Kapoor’s lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, opened up about Samaira’s university fees due. Now, according to Viral Bhayani's report, the remark was made when Justice Jyoti Singh questioned Priya Sachdev’s legal team about the absence of Sunjay Kapur’s inputs in the alleged forged will and the university fees due for Samaira.

On November 14, 2025, Karisma Kapoor’s lawyer and senior advocate, Mahesh Jethmalani, made some new claims during the court proceeding. For the uninitiated, according to Sunjay’s third wife, Priya Sachdev, the will states that the UK businessman has left his entire personal estate to her and has excluded his children, Samaira and Kiaan, who are the eligible class 1 heirs. He has excluded his own mother, Rani Kapur as well, who also belongs to the class 1 heir. However, Priya’s claim has been challenged in court by Karisma’s lawyer.

During the recent court proceeding, Mahesh Jethmalani, the representative of Karisma’s kids, claimed that Samaira’s university fees are due for the past two months. Karisma’s daughter, Samaira, is currently studying at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA. Mahesh mentioned that Sunjay Kapur, under the matrimonial decree, is liable to fund his children’s education and expenses. The senior advocate then claimed that Sunjay’s widow, Priya Sachdev, is currently controlling the children's estate.

In defense, Rajiv Nayar, Priya Sachdev’s lawyer and senior advocate, quashed the claims made by Karisma’s lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani. He stated that Sunjay Kapur’s third wife has consistently provided whatever is necessary to the children and has also cleared the dues, including Samaira’s university fees. He later highlighted that this matter was brought up in court just to grab the media’s attention.

The recent court proceeding was led by Justice Jyoti Singh. Samaira’s university fees due claim was made before Justice Jyoti Singh. Upon hearing the claim, she warned both parties not to make the court proceedings 'melodramatic'. She then instructed Priya Sachdev’s legal team to ensure that these kinds of matters are not brought up in court next time and to handle these things outside the court.

Earlier this year, during a court proceeding, Karisma Kapoor’s lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, accused Priya of limiting the inheritance meant for Karisma’s kids, Samaira and Kiaan. He also provided details about how much Priya Sachdev has got. He also referred to Priya as Cinderella stepmother, an evil stepmother from the fairytale. He was quoted as saying:
"This is a Cinderella stepmother. Who is really greedy? She has already got 60% of the assets, around 12% to her own son, and 75% of the trust. She was in such a hurry, she even started writing letters about Benami forms, which are used to decide beneficiaries of companies."
