Deb Mukherjee is a renowned filmmaker who passed away at the age of 83 on March 14, 2025. The actor was suffering from multiple age-related health issues. After the news of his tragic demise, several Bollywood celebrities paid a visit to Deb Mukherjee's residence to offer their condolences. Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and many others met Deb Mukherjee's family members.

Soon after Deb Mukherjee's demise, a representative of the veteran actor issued a formal statement in the media in which he was lauded for organising Durga Puja. The statement can be read as "We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Mr Debu Mukherjee, an actor and driving force of the North Bombay Durga Puja. He left us this morning." The veteran actor's last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai's Juhu.

Deb Mukherjee was born on November 22, 1941, in Kanpur, United Provinces, British India. The filmmaker belongs to the Mukherjee-Samarth family. Deb Mukherjee also ventured into acting and direction because of his family's involvement in the film and entertainment industry. As per multiple reports, Deb Mukherjee worked as an actor in a series of renowned films like Tu Hi Meri Zindagi, Ansoo Ban Gaye Phool, Do Aankhen, Baton Baton Mein, Mamata Ki Chhaon Mein, Jo Jeeta Vohi Sikandar, Views Of the Inner Chamber, and many more.

After working as an actor in a series of films, Deb Mukherjee also ventured into direction with the film, Karate in the later stages of his career. It was in 1983 when Deb decided to sit behind the lens and assembled an impressive cast, including Mithun Chakraborty, Kaajal Kiran, Yogeeta Bali, Kader Khan, and more. Dinesh Thakkar, S.H. Bihari, and Debanshu Mukherjee penned the film's story. However, after this one picture, he didn't continue directing films and soon moved away from the glam and glitz of Hindi cinema.

Deb Mukherjee is the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee and Sati Rani Devi. For the unversed, Sati Rani Devi was the daughter of Kunjalal Ganguly and Gouri Devi. For the unversed, she is the only sister of Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. Talking about the next generation of the Mukherjee family, Deb's siblings include Shomu Mukherjee, Rono Mukherjee, Subbir Mukherjee, and Joy Mukherjee. For the uninitiated, Shomu Mukherjee is the father of renowned Bollywood actresses, Kajol and Tanishaa.

The veteran actor, Deb Mukherjee, married twice in his life; his first marriage was with a woman named Manisha. The couple got married in 1988 and welcomed a daughter, whom they had named Sunita. For the uninitiated, Sunita Mukherjee is married to critically acclaimed filmmaker, Ashutosh Gowariker. Yes! You read it right. Deb Mukherjee was the Laagan director's father-in-law, and they shared a beautiful bond with each other.

According to several reports, after parting ways with Manisha, Deb Mukherjee got married to Amrit Mukherjee. The couple welcomed a son in August 1983 and named him Ayan Mukerji. It is not known whether Ayan and Sunita share a close bond with each other because we have rarely seen them together in public.

Apart from being an established actor and filmmaker, Deb Mukherjee was also quite famous for organising the Durga Puja pandal every year in Mumbai. The pandal used to attract a series of celebrities every year during the Navratri week. Deb Mukherjee and his family have been celebrating Durga Puja in Mumbai for more than seven decades now. The pandal organised by the Mukherjee family holds a unique significance in Mumbai and played an instrumental role in popularising Durga Puja in North Mumbai.
