Christy Martin is a former American professional boxer. She is the most successful and prominent female boxing legend in the United States. At the age of 21, she began her professional boxing career. Be it her profession or personal life, she has always remained vocal about this. According to multiple reports, when Christy was in her 5th or 6th grade, she realised she was a lesbian, who was attracted to other girls. She married her former ring rival, Lisa Holewyne, in 2017. However, her previous marriage to Jim Martin was nothing less than a toxic, abusive relationship.

Christy Martin, who was Christy Salters back then, reportedly met Jim Martin in the late 1980s. She was 22 years old, while Jim was 47. The duo shared an age gap of 25 years. During that time, Jim was a well-known and respected boxing trainer. He used to train the female boxing legend.

Christy Martin's marriage to Jim Martin was nothing less than a business deal

Christy tied the knot with her trainer, Jim Martin, in 1991. After training Christy for one year, Jim proposed to her for marriage. After getting married, the couple moved to Apopka, Florida. They opened a boxing gym and focused on building Christy’s career. However, behind the scenes, things were totally different. According to Christy, her husband, Jim, didn’t really believe in women’s boxing. But after seeing her potential, he found her a way to earn money. Speaking with David Beganud, Christy said:

"He thought… It’ll be a sideshow, but I think I can get her in a position where we can make some money."

Christy realised that she is a lesbian and has a tendency to fall for girls when she was in school. However, her parents were unaware of this thing during that time. In fact, she also had a relationship in her high school with a fellow athlete, Sherry Lusk. But when her parents got to know this, they couldn’t accept it. After her relationship with Jim, she considered him her confidant and confided in him about her darkest secrets. But everything changed when Jim learned about her past. He started controlling, blackmailing her and threatened to expose her secrets to the public. Fearing the consequences, Christy remained silent.

Jim Martin left Christy Martin to die after hearing that she wanted a divorce

In March 2010, Christy Martin had reconnected with her high school girlfriend, Sherry Lusk, through social media. In the same year, in November, she informed her husband, Jim Martin, that she wanted a divorce. However, Christy’s decision to get a divorce didn’t go well with him. On November 23, 2010, while Christy was in her bedroom, Jim attacked her with a buck knife, stabbing her multiple times in her chest. There was a deep cut in her left leg. He then fired a shot at her chest using her pink 9 mm handgun. During a past interview with David Benaud, Christy recalled the horrifying moment and said:

"He missed my heart by three inches. … I passed out. And he thought I was dead."

After remaining senseless for an hour, Christy regained her senses and gathered her strength to flee, while Jim was in the shower. She first tried to drive her car, but soon realised that she had the wrong car keys. So, she ran towards the road, bleeding heavily, and stopped a passing car. The driver, Rick Cole, rushed her to the hospital, where she was taken to the emergency room. Meanwhile, Jim fled and was later arrested after being on the run for seven days.
