Christina Koch Becomes Only Woman Astronaut To Travels Farthest From Earth, Courtesy Artemis II

Artemis II is the most important and historic moon mission. It is NASA's first crewed mission, which has sent four famous astronauts around the moon. It will be a 10-day journey, and it will test the life-support systems, navigation and deep space operation to establish human presence on the moon. Amidst it, the only woman astronaut, Christina Koch, has created history by being the first woman to travel the farthest from Earth.

NASA's only woman astronaut on the Artemis II mission, Christina Koch, has created history. She is one of the four astronauts on board for the historic mission to find life on the moon. However, she has set a record by being the first woman to travel more than 4 lakh kilometres away from Earth as part of the ongoing moon mission. The Artemis II astronauts' spacecraft is named Integrity. 

It is worth mentioning that Christina Koch is the first woman to travel to the moon. She is an explorer and engineer and started her career as an astronaut in 2013. The 47-year-old is a Michigan resident and has been on board as a mission specialist. She is known for living and working on the International Space Station for almost the entire year 2019. She has also set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman on the ISS, lasting 328 days. 

Christina Koch saved Artemis II from the biggest human crisis

The first real test of the moon mission for Artemis II was not from radiation, propulsion or navigation but from the toilet. The Orion faced the biggest problem when the waste system faltered between Earth and the Moon. Inside the spacecraft, the four astronauts faced a big system issue as it touched hygiene, storage and mission continuity. That's when Christina Koch stepped up and decided to lend a helping hand.

It happened right after the spacecraft reached orbit. It appeared on the spacecraft's Universal Waste Management System. The suction-based toilet, designed for space travel, relies on airflow, pumps, and fans to pull waste away from the body. But there were issues with the fan and controller, which disrupted the urnie collection while the solid waste system remained functional. 

As the crew on Earth was busy understanding the issue, the astronauts used collapsible urine collection devices. Meanwhile, Christina Koch was busy working with the engineer and trying to fix the issues, and helped eradicate the problem. The astronaut proudly called herself the space plumber after the issue.

ChristianKoch is married to Robert Koch. She met her husband while she was working at a remote research base in American Samoa. For the unversed, American Samoa is located 500 miles south of Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific. At that time, she was working with a climate research station. Christina called herself extremely 'lucky' to meet her husband. As per Christina, she and her husband, Robert, met at a Halloween party.
